DARTMOUTH MENLUNCHEON EVERY MONDAY NOONUNIVERSITY CLUB, CHICAGO

We are now a corporation, i.e., The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Chicago, a corporation not for profit, organized under the Laws of the State of Illinois. The change was authorized by the Executive Committee at a meeting held December 6, 1948. Justin A.Stanley '33, our Alumni Councilor-at-Law, did the organizing with the result that our status is now more clearly defined. We understand that some of the other local alumni groups have also incorporated, and according to the gratuitous opinions of some of our barrister members, it is a good idea.

Following closely upon this decisive move came the Christmas Cocktail Party held at the University Club on December 21 which was, as usual, a whooping success.

Then came the Undergraduate Luncheon on Monday, December 27, attended by about one hundred men including undergraduates and a few non-Dartmouth dads. The meeting featured no speeches and some sweet harmony by Gordy Hinners '45, brother George Winners '49, Bill Embree '50 and Jay Buck '50. When the quartet had finished, Gordy Hinners got us all to sing. We were pleased to have DickLitchfield '22, of Boston and Wellesley, President of the Charles River Dartmouth Club, at this meeting.

The New Year was royally welcomed in on New Year's night with a glorious basketball victory over Northwestern. The Evanston High School gym was jam-packed full of Dartmouth and Northwestern partisans, including 600 of our local undergraduates and alumni. Ticket distribution was competently handled by George "Tige" Lyon '25, who unfortunately did not have enough tickets to go around. We are sorry that the game could not be broadcast and that so many of the loyal brethren were deprived of the chance to see the Big Green defeat the Northwestern Wildcats 52. to 49.

Now we are looking forward to the Second Annual Hanover-Holiday-in-Chicago to be held Saturday, February 5, at the University Club. At this writing we are already assured of the presence of Professor Arthur Wilson, formerly Associate Director of the Great Issues Course, Director of Athletics Bill McCarter '19 and a much welcomed return engagement of President Dickey.

We have been glad to see a number of new faces at our luncheons recently including BillDonahue '45, who has moved to Chicago to join the Advertising Department of the Chicago Tribune; O. S. Haverfield. '39; B. H. Hallin '24; and John Sheldon '32 who has been busy running Charles A. Stevens and Company. We were glad recently to welcome back Spic Saunders '22 who was laid up with arthritis for several months.

An outstanding job has been done in connection with the Dartmouth Scholarship Fund by Hal Sommer '40, ably assisted by Tom Vent '39. Our hope is that this fund may be large enough in the near future to enable our Association to sponsor one outstanding student from this area in each class at the college instead of the awarding of a scholarship in alternate years, as at present.

Bob Coulson '33 is a candidate for Mayor of nearby Waukegan in the February primary to be held in that city. Bob has made an outstanding record as Assistant States Attorney of Lake County in charge of juvenile cases and has a national reputation for his work in connection with juvenile delinquency.

Dick Montgomery '35 and Bob Woodcock'33 got out another issue of "Dartmouth In Chicago," our local news publication, just before the Christmas Holidays. The news bulletin was patterned after that of the New York Association and was a well organized and easily readable sheet. The next issue is expected in February.

Biggest romantic news of the season was the announcement of the engagement of BotsYoung '49 to Ann Treadway of West Hartford, Conn. Bots is the Junior edition of the well known and staunch alumnus Bots Young '18 and the beautiful Ruth Young.

Dick Babcock '40 has formed a partnership with one George W. Overton to practice law at 134 South LaSalle Street under the firm name of Overton and Babcock.
