Got a telephone call from the town of Oneida, N. Y. the other day. While I was frantically trying to guess who I knew there a voice announced that it was Andy Marks calling. Andy is an adjuster for the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Ins. Cos. and is located in Oneida. He mentioned having rented a summer place at a nearby beach and that he is planning on being married this summer. I was so surprised at hearing from him that I forgot to get the details such as her name, where they met, etc. That info will have to wait for a later column.
The long hunt for a Flushing "good will ambassador" to represent the community abroad this summer ended with the selection o£ 25-year-old Russell F. Stryker Jr. He has picked for the free trip over five remaining candidates by a committee of Flushing areas religious, civic and business leaders. A graduate student at Columbia, he will leave this summer for Europe. The trip will center around Vlissingen, Holland, the Dutch community from which Flushing got its name. While there he will exchange ideas with the Dutch people on the family level and send his reports back to Flushing. The ambassador-elect was nominated for the post by Dr. George C. Crane, principal of Bayside High School, who said he had a scholastic record practically unequaled in the 14-year history of the school. Russ is studying to be a history teacher, specializing in Western Europe. The itinery includes a 3 week stay in Vlissingen, a 10 day trip through the canals of Holland, 2 weeks at the Univ. of Utrecht summer school, a week in Belgium and another week in other parts of Holland. It sounds like a wonderful trip and it certainly is an honor for Russ.
