STANTON B. PRIDDY
Ever since we resumed operations in October, we have had more news in hand than we were able to squeeze into our allotted space. That situation still exists, but we have tried to include this month the most pressing items.
First of all, we want to express sympathy on behalf of the class to John Cook, whose wife Marcia Anne Megowen Cook died of leukemia in Saginaw, Mich., Aug. 19. Marcia and John were married Dec. 28, 1946 in Wilmette, Ill. Their daughter Marjorie Ann celebrated her second birthday Nov. 19. John plans to continue to live in San Antonio.
News has reached us of a second classmate who has re-entered the armed services since the Korean war started. In addition to JackKimball, whose recall by the Marines was reported in October, Dave Loughlin volunteered to rejoin the Navy and was assigned in August to the Yokosaka Naval Base in Japan with the rank of lieutenant junior grade. Dave had to leave a week before the publication of his second novel, A PrivateStair. He is married and had been working in a chemical laboratory in Norwalk, Conn.
Two more '43 bachelors have broken down and said, "I do." Chris McCord was scheduled to be married Oct. 7 in Clarkston, Mich., to Janet Stickney, a University of Michigan alumna. Chris is still a senior resident physician at the VA hospital in Glendale, Ohio.
And that New York Yachtsman and former Dartmouth Corinthian Yacht-Clubber, BusMosbacher, was slated to be wed Nov. 24 in the Plaza Hotel, New York, to Patricia Ann Ryan, a Bennington alumna.
We also have the marriage dates of four classmates whose engagements we chronicled last month. They are: Margaret Ann Haber to Jack Behringer, Aug. 26 in Union City, Ind. (Jack Holliday was best man. Also, the groom is working in Cleveland, not Macon, Ga. as we had believed.); Mary Bonnell Jones to Bill Chilcote, Oct. 6 in Shaker Heights; Julia Jeffrey Bartlett to Howie Geer, Sept 16 in Niagara Falls, N. Y. (Dixie Daniels was an usher); and Mary Meyer to Bruce Jones, Sept. 30 in Interlaken, N. Y.
From Paterson, N. J., comes word that WCLTT6TI Van Dyk, papa of two boys, received the amazing total of 198,000 votes to gain a clear-cut victory in a "Father of the Year contest. (According to the Morning Call, the field was "studded with many runners-up.") Among Van's prizes were a $100 government bond, a club chair, ottoman, a smoking stand, and $25 in meals at a local restaurant. Said Paterson's "Father of the Year" to a Call rep orter: "I am deeply grateful to Mr. Nash and the Regal Furniture Cos. (contest sponsors) and all my friends and family who helped me win this contest. Here's one time it's Pop who collects the velvet!"
Joe Koci preached his first sermon Aug. 13 as curate of St. John's Episcopal Church, Waterbury, Conn. He succeeded Rev. Frederick W. Phinney, new rector of Our Savior's Church, Brookline, Mass.
Fred Stockwell writes that he, Marjorie and their three children have moved from Belmont to a larger house at 2 Cabot St., Winchester. "Had a very pleasant summer," Fred reports. "Took my vacation in Maine at our cottage with our gang."
Jim Ewing has been appointed instructor in psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania's Medical School. He is also on the staff of the University's hospital.
Ed Ingraham, formerly vice consul at La Paz, Bolivia, has been transferred to one of the world's hot-spots, Hong Kong, in a similar U. S. diplomatic role. He, wife Susan and son John stopped off en route in Long Beach, Calif., in August to visit Ed's parents.
Herb Marx has edited another reference book for the H. W. Wilson Cos. His latest is titled, The Welfare State.
Don Miller and Stan Priddy were members of the Boston alumni club committee which sponsored a dance in the Copley Plaza after the Harvard game.
Among those reported in Hanover for the Holy Cross game were Bud and Angela Kast from Short Hills, N. J., and Jim and NatalieStewart from Rochester, N. Y. Two couples, who, we suspect, were honeymooning, spent several days at the Inn in October. One is Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Coffin from Hartford, Conn., and the other is Mr. and Mrs. PaulRandall from Harrisburg, Pa. We previously reported Kelly's engagement to Jane Coffin of the Insurance City and the last we knew Paul was a bachelor. We hope to have more information shortly.
Other visitors to Hanover were John andDorothy McCarthy, who were in from St. Louis late in September, and Andy and ClaireCaffrey from Methuen, Mass., and Dick andDoris Emerson from Short Hills, N. J., all of whom were in town in early October.
Ray Nash's ex-pupil, Al Eisenman, has been appointed typographer for the Yale University Press. We will have more to report on this important appointment next month.
We now sign off with a mighty Wah-HooWah for the '43 Alumni Fund contributors listed below and hearty wish to all for a Merry Christmas.
