December was GREEN in Denver and Colorado. The weather was GREEN", clubs and hotels weekly were decorated in GREEN, Dartmouth activities made other alumni groups GREEN with envy, Denver's fashionable shops were sold out of GREEN gowns, GREEX ribbon was in short supply, GREEN paint became practically unavailable, nonDartmouth people took GREEN trees into their homes, and it is even rumored some saw GREEN dragons after too many GREEN drinks on GREEN stomachs at too many holiday parties.
It all started December 8 at the University Club when 40 GREEN stalwarts met for a smoker at the University Club with EddieChamberlain '36, Assistant Director of Athletics. Eddie gave us a pleasant and memorable evening in his showing of football movies and his talk on the College today. In fact his pleasantly disarming manner stimulated bull session discussions which continued separately throughout the room for hours after the more formal part of the smoker. It was a grand Dartmouth evening and we are not only indebted to Eddie for that party but also for his untiring two days at the secondary schools throughout the area. The Admissions Committee took his word that he was at our disposal except for time for one shower.
GREEN gowns, GREEN ties or sox, were next whisked out for the Squaws Cocktail Party at the University Club, December 23. The Dartmouth grandmothers, matrons, young marrieds, and sweet young things took the young and old Indians by the scalplock (some had to use our hands) and really showed us how to put on a real Dartmouth fiesta. Over 200 strong, we welcomed each other and the holiday season again and again. Jerry Wood '24 enlivened the party with stellar work on the piano. Over 40 stayed for a subscription dinner with impromptu speeches and diatribes on various unimportant subjects. Head Squaw AliceToothaker '32 again receives a Wah HooWah for an even bigger, better party than last year.
The GREEN holiday season was topped off by an Undergraduate Sendoff Luncheon, December 30, that grew so large we had to arrange for a larger room and finally 120 of Colorado's GREEN enthusiasts assembled in the Albany Hotel Ballroom to hear of the College today through the eyes and words of the undergraduates themselves. Eight Fathers, 50 Alumni, 31 Undergraduates, and 31 high school candidates heard fine talks by Bert Melcher '53, Bob Linger '52, RodgerEwy '53, Don McMichael '53, Karl Zimmerman '53, Don Brown '50, and Howard Bissell '51. Norrie Williamson '26, Undergraduate Liaison Chairman, presided.
The press advises us there will be a GREEN tinge to the F.I.S. international races at Aspen, February 13 to 18. Brooks Dodge '52 and Dave Lawrence '52, both of the Dartmouth Ski team, will compete in the downhill and slalom. Officials include Steve Bradley '39, race chief; Dick Durrance '39, chief of giant slalom course; and Leonard Woods '42, Secretary.
GREEN ribbons also to Steve Bradley '39, art instructor at the University of Colorado, on the announcement of his design of a highball and old fashioned glass set with hand painted action ski figures recently illustrated in Esquire Magazine: and to Prexv BillGrant '31, chairman of Mayor Newton's Committee on Human Relations, for his special citation by the Mile Hi Lodge of B'nai B'rith for the accomplishments of his committee in this field.
Word from the GREEN printed News of the Dartmouth Club of New York tells us Bill Spoor '46, now living at the Club, is playing football for the Long Island College All-Stars and handling foreign markets for the Pillsbury Mills Overseas Division.
Welcomes to Laurence Hewes '24 and D. E.Waggaman '35 who are GREEN in our service but good loyal alumni we are glad to have in Denver. Hewes is with the U. S. Reclamation Service, having just returned from the Pacific, and Waggaman is State Agent of the Commercial Union Association Cos., Ltd.
Prexy Grant has announced March 28 as the date of the Annual Dinner to be held at the University Club. Cocktails at 5:30, dinner at 6:45. A large turnout is anticipated as Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, will be with us. For the election of officers, a nominating committee was appointed consisting of Bob More 'l3, chairman; Ed Small '410; John Cunningham '18; HarryLitzenberger '32; and Cy Allen '45. Also tentatively scheduled are the regular last Friday of the month luncheons at the Albany January 27 and February 24.
Listen for the Bellringers! 1950 will be GREEN!
