"To me June 16 was a day of blessed, happy memories," President Newton wrote classmates after reunion, expressing the feeling of all who participated in '86's 65th special reunion "in body/arid in spirit." "We were with you all in Hanover on that day 'in the spirit,' " said Billie, "and simultaneously were at luncheon with friends of Dartmouth 'in the body,' our chief guest being Mrs. Leona Atkinson Jackson, niece of Leslie P. Snow."
Reunion revived many proud Class memories, among them the distinguished careers of Edwin Brant Frost, the world-renowned astronomer, who lighted the Chicago World's Fair from the light of Arcturus, and of RobertGilman Brown, the world-renowned mining engineer, who, according to the autobiography of Herbert Hoover, influenced the young Hoover to get a college education and to major in engineering.
In the Dartmouth Bulletin No. 20 issued last summer there appeared this item: "College interest also focused on Hanover High School, where eight of the 28 boys to graduate will continue their education on home grounds ..." (that is, in September 1951).
It may be of interest to note that in 1882 eight boys from the Hanover High School, also, continued their education in Dartmouth in the Class of 1886, and all of them graduated. Two of them became college professors (astronomy and medicine), one founded a fellowship in literature, one was most active in giving and securing gifts for the College, one was varsity pitcher, and all were successful in their various fields. These eight were Ed Frost, Gil Frost, Dick Campbell, FredHeilge, Elmer Howard, Granville Howard,Frank McCarthy and Billie Newton. Newton is the only survivor.
