A VALUABLE and unique collection of material by and relating to the famous American playwright, Eugene O'Neill, has been presented to Baker Library by Mrs. Bella C. Landauer of New York City, mother of James D. Landauer '23. The gift was made through the Friends of the Dartmouth Library.
A feature of the collection is five scrap books containing 175 programs of O'Neill plays, many of European origin. It is considered the most complete collection now in existence. Also of interest to collectors are 68 O'Neill letters, 43 of them in the author's handwriting.
Among other items in the Landauer gift are 24 books, most of which are first editions of O'Neill plays, including editions in Japanese and Swedish. Also included are the galley proofs of Dynamo and Strange Interlude, several posters and a large number of clippings. A set of TheAmerican Spectator, of which O'Neill was co-editor, rounds out the collection. One of the issues of The American Spectator is autographed by the editors, O'Neill, George Jean Nathan, Ernest Boyd, Theo-dore Dreiser, and James Branch Cabell.
Mrs. Landauer is a former member of the Executive Committee of the Friends of the Dartmouth Library and has made numerous other gifts to the College.
