The Spokane and Inland Empire Dartmouth Association, with William H. Farnham '20, presiding, held its annual dinner at the Early Birds Club in the Davenport Hotel, February 28.
George H. Colton '35, executive secretary of the Dartmouth Development Council, as guest speaker was enthusiastically received by those attending. Aside from giving the local alumni, their wives and friends, the color at Carnival time (possibly the last full scale one for some time), a review of the athletic endeavors in the various sports, and an up-to-date picture of the physical changes in the college plant, he spoke at some length about the expected reduced enrollment and what it is going to mean to the college. He mentioned the possibility of an Air Force ROTC, in addition to the Naval unit, and the recent selection of Dartmouth to house an Army Ordnance ROTC as some financial compensation for loss in tuition. But the needs of the college will not be met. Mr. Colton pointed out that the expected returns from the alumni fund together with gifts and bequests would not be adequate to run the college on the normal basis, since expenses are rocketing out of proportion, and other means must be tapped to bridge the gap. In conclusion, Mr. Colton stated that the Development Council was therefore instituted for the purpose of launching a program to attract selective gifts from other sources, and by acquainting the general alumni, parents and friends with the problems which beset the college.
The turnout for this annual affair was commendable. The Alumni present consisted of Bill Farnham '20, president; Frederick W. Welch '06; R. D. Lamb '43; Ford S. Barrett Jr. '25; Dr. Kenneth E. Gross '41; George P. Hill '32; C. M. Lockwood '04; Willard McLaughlin '25; Dr. Ray M. Schulte '13; A. A. Selivanoif '33. Others present were their wives and friends, and a prospective undergraduate, Roger Sherman, sponsored by Mr. Hill.
