LAST month Harry Duncombe mentioned that March 1 meant that spring was just around the corner. I haven't been able to discover what corner Harry had in mind because he is spending the first week of April in "Washington (where the sun shines and there is no snow). As for Hanover, we have just had one of those April snowstorms which seem to have as their sole objective the creation of enough mud to justify continued use of the "duckboards."
March was a busy month for Tuck. A number of excellent speakers appeared at the School during this period.
C. H. O'Neil of the Nashua Gummed and Coated Paper Company, Nashua, N. H., met with Jack Walters' Industrial Relations class on March 2.
F. Ray Adams, T'20, president and general manager of the John T. Slack Corporation, Springfield, Vt., was at Tuck March 3 for his annual meeting with Nat Burleigh's General Management group.
Marvin L. Frederick, Director of Personnel, Peat, Marwick & Mitchell, New York, spoke to the Industrial Relations class on March 9.
Sumner J. Robinson, D' 24, General Sales Manager, Bigelow Sanford Carpet Company, New York, met with Al Frey's Advertising and Retailing classes to discuss Bigelow's sales and advertising plans for 1951.
H. Dwight Meader, T'41, General Electric Company, West Lynn, Mass., met with the Administrative Controls and General Management classes on March 8 and 9.
George Renard, Secretary-Treasurer of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, was in Hanover March 14 for his annual meeting with the General Management class.
Arnold E. Hanson, Director of Company Relations, Brown Paper Company, Berlin, N. H., was the Industrial Relations course's speaker on March 14.
Robert M. Edgar, D'28, Assistant to the President, Boston and Maine Railroad, journeyed to Hanover March 15 for an interesting session with the General Management class.
On March 17, General Management had as its guest speaker Kenneth Henderson, President of Ditto, Inc.
Charles H. Jones Jr., D' 23, President of Commonwealth Shoe and Leather, makers of the popular Bostonian shoes, discussed the advertising and retailing problems of his business with Al Frey's second-year classes.
Frederick J. Shepard Jr., General Manager, Lewis-Shepard, producers of materials handling equipment, had meetings with the General Management and Production Management classes on March 22.
March 23 marked the appearance of Clark C. Sorenson, T'37, Director of Personnel, Harris-Seybold Company, for his usual stimulating meeting with the Industrial Relations class. Clark was in town to interview candidates for openings in his company.
W. M. Tetrick, T'39, A. S. Robie, Inc., Boston, was the guest of the General Management class March 29.
Ed Gruen has been elected an associate in the Society of American Foresters. He has also received confirmation of the award of a research grant from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston to support his field studies this summer on the economics of wood waste utilization in New England.
On March 29, some sixty Tuck, graduates gathered for the annual Tuck Clearing House Dinner in Boston. The meeting, held this year at Schrafft's, featured a talk by Dean Robert B. Stewart of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts and Harvard. Olie Olsen reviewed the news of Tuck for alumni present. Harry Duncombe and Nat Burleigh rounded out the Tuck representation at the meeting planned by Nate Bugbee T'26 and Larry Cate, T'41, manager and secretary respectively. The business meeting featured the election of BenStacey T'30 of The First National Bank of Boston as manager and Harris Richardson, T'42 of the Old Colony Trust Company as secretary. With the affairs of the Clearing House in the hands of these two bankers, all should be well in 1951-1952.
Robert W. Page, T'28, industrial insurance counselor, Cambridge, has been retained by the College to review its casualty insurance problems and submit a report of findings and recommendations to Treasurer John F. Meek.
Edmund R. Kohn, T'49, has recently joined Merck & Cos., at their Rahway, N. J., plant.
Daniel J. Raabin, T'go, is in the Finance Section, Division Headquarters, 45th Infantry Division, Camp Polk, Louisiana.
Marion and Art Stukey, T'42, announce the birth of Katherine Cole Stukey on March 16.
The Al Bildners, T'48, have announced the birth of Robert Lesbon Bildner on March 4.
