Apologies to "Doc" Walters and to the Class for my mistake in not getting the famous Doctor's photograph in the April issue. However, here it is, and it's just like Chesterfield cigarettes—note the smile of satisfaction.
Good news from Howie Stockwell's gang of hard working agents. From where I sit, the contributions are larger percentagewise than last year, but we are quite a bit behind in contributions. How about shaving off that lethargical winter character and write a check to the Alumni Fund pronto?
Jim Cone, a diligent working guy from Duluth, Minn., sends in one of his rare bits of information:
"As you probably know, the wife and myself attended graduation last June when our son Bill graduated. We do not have any more prospects tor Dartmouth so guess our next trip will be in 1953 at 1917 reunion unless the whole world is aflane again at that time. When East I enjoyed a very fine visit with Spike Mclntyre, also visited a few minutes with "Sunny" Sanborn and Ev Robia. The only other '17er I have seen since that time is Ralph Dunning.
"Two of our boys are married and settled down. Leon Jr. '51 lives in Arlington, Mass., and is with Dewey & Almy Chemical Co. Chuck lives here in Duluth and travels the Iron Route selling tractors, graders, etc. to the open pit mines. Both of these have two children so we now have one grandson and three granddaughters. Bill, who graduated in '50, is with the Joy Manufacturing Company. He has been at Claremont, N. H., since last September, is now at Pittsburgh headquarters for at least a month.
"It has been a long, cold winter and believe me will establish a new record for snowfall. Have had about 88 inches. The wife and I are tearing out of here on Saturday morning for the deep South for a few weeks.
"Getting along in years so lead quite a simple life. I travel quite a great deal as well as managing this district.
"If any '17er ever breaks down and takes a trip to this Arrowhead country, I most certainly want them to be sure and stop in Duluth. We are a friendly lot and will do our best."
Tom Clark, newly made vice-president ofOmaha Steel Works, writes that he and Ellenvisited Jack Baer in San Francisco last month.
Quote from Almon Bushnell, "This is my 16th year as superintendent of schools covering six rural towns in central New Hampshire. The job has infinite variety, from distributing brooms for one-room schools to helping design a modern building program and conducting workshops for teachers of all grades. Family news includes a total of eight grandchildren to date. We spend much of our spare time figuring out what we would like to do after retirement, which is five years away. We seldom if ever see any 17'ers."
The Dartmouth Club, New York, reports Em Ward visited the Club during the past month.
Curly Carr, just recovering from a week in bed with the flu, quotes,
"My plans for the spring and summer are very indefinite but probably will mean staying at home most of the time with the nose to the grindstone at the office in Boston. That really isn't any great hardship as we have swimming and sailing for summer occupations without going out of Hingham
"As it happened, I missed quite a bit of time from business in 1950. My wife and I sailed for Europe early in April last year and didn't get back until the last of May. We had a very pleasant time in France and England, seeing a number of friends in both countries. Shortly after we got back, my daughter Nancy announced her engagement and was married on November 18. Her husband is M.I.T. and not Dartmouth, but a grand chap even
SO. The middle of September I had a fall at the
yacht club and fractured both elbows, laying me up for some time. As a bit of advice, if it is necessary to do this, try to do it one elbow at a time. It is a nuisance, to say the least, to have both out of commission at the same time. However, luckily, I was able to walk up the aisle when my daughter was married, although it was fortunate the wedding hadn't been planned any earlier."
Carl Colby, now living in Meredith, N. H., reports he has been temporarily retired, having just recovered from a serious illness; however, advises he is now in the best of health.
Gyp Green's son Laurence is one of the 11 Phi Beta Kappas of the Dartmouth seniors. Congratulations to everyone concerned!
A note from Arch Gile states that he would like to get reservations in the very near future for the Cornell-Dartmouth game this fall, otherwise, it will be impossible to get the gang all in one place. So far we have four couples who have sent in their deposit. Please, fellows, make up your mind so that we can either have a reunion or call it off.
Trott King's new address is Summer Haven, Southold, L. 1., N. Y.
These notes possibly look pretty short, but news from you fellows seems to be rather scarce. Personally, I am taking in the Kentucky Derby in Louisville and hope all you men are having as good a time as I intend to have.
