Needless to say, I was slightly surprised when I picked up my October MAG and saw that I was no longer listed as secretary. However, as I read over the ensuing article, there was no getting around it; it was my drivel. So I enquired of Charlie Widmayer, editor, as to what was what. He promptly assured me that there had been a mistake [Ed. How kind he is; he could very readily have called it a stupid mistake and been right] so I, as promptly, picked up my pencil and started making with more drivel. Here 'tis.
Allow me to warn you that the next few months' columns may be slightly incoherent for as my wedding date draws nearer my periods of concentration will get farther and farther apart. At least that's the counsel I received from countless married friends who seem only too willing to offer me advice on the intricacies of marriage. If I took all the advice to heart, I'd be a nervous wreck long before my time. But, of course, I should heed the voices of experience, or so they tell me. Seriously, Gentlemen, I am to be wed on December 20 in Grosse Pointe, Mich., to Miss Gertrude Ford of that village. All members of the illustrious class of 1945 residing in that vicinity are hereby welcome to attend and join in the festivities. This offer is valid only in the continental limits of the United States. Children under 12 not admitted. And also, the management will assume no responsibility for personal property such as cars, hats, coats, suitcases, wives, etc.
My apologies to Miss Susan Gile, born May 6, 1952, for not including her name in last month's column. Her card was misplaced and since has been located. Incidentally, her parents are Mr. and Mrs. John F. Gile Jr. Also in the Wah-hoo-waaaaa column is Miss Margaret Barker of Nashville, Tenn. She arrived in this upset and frustating world on July 27 last, and her father Hank Barker is to be congratulated. And we do offer our congratulations. Congratulations! Hank is associated with the insurance division of General Motors when he is not associating with his wife Marilyn, who also deserves and gets congratulations, and new daughter. And also joining the father's club with an August 2 arrival, a son, is Ed Bennett. This young man's name is Mark Edwin Bennett and father Ed himself sent in this information. Probably registered him at Dartmouth at the same time. That's the way to do it.
My Hanover agent reports that the following gentlemen with wives spent leisurely hours during the last few months enjoying a restful time in Hanover: H. H. Heintzelman,Dick Owen, Fred Williamson and Blair McClenachan.
Coming up in the world are: Ev Connell, granted a fellowship from the Eugene F. Saxton Memorial Trust, established by Harper and Brothers to provide assistance to writers. Ev has been writing stories, one of which was included in the 1951 O. Henry Anthology, for the last six years. A man of many talents, he has also studied painting and sculpturing and is now living in Paris; Hunt Bennett, who has recently joined the advertising sales staff o£ Time; Elmer Trumbull, named assistant professor of chemistry at Brown University. Since 1947, Elmer has been doing research work at M.I.T. on a duPont scholarship; Frank Biggs, who recently joined the staff of the ClaremontEagle; Wilford Rinkor, named manager of the Westfield office of the N. J. Bell Telephone Company.
And now to the hearts and flowers department. Irv Booth has got "catched." The young lady is Miss Diane Dewhurst of Ridgewood, N. J., a graduate of Elmira College. A November wedding is planned so Irv may be al- ready "gone" by the time this reaches you. Jofm Little also had a bit about him appear in the papers. Seems he's given up and plans on settling down too. Miss Jean Lee Hartig of New York (known to those who reside there as "the City"), a graduate of Columbia University, has captured John. From her picture, I'd say he's a pretty lucky guy. Monthly matrimonial matters are mostly meager but one event does deserve decisive and direct dissertation. On September 1, Miss Ruth Bilgrei of the Bronx was married to Lee Kreindler. An impressive write-up from which the following facts were gleaned: Ruth graduated from N.Y.U. and is now going to that University's Law School. Lee, of course, is a lawyer and a member of the American Bar Association.
C'est tout for the time being. Certainly would appreciate some mail from you wives (I've given up on the husbands). Just a note so I'll know what you've been doing Dartmouth-wise. Thank you.
