It is always a saddening experience to receive news of the passing of a classmate, and especially one so full of vitality and the love of living that characterized John Monahan, whose obituary appears in this issue. In undergraduate days, passing him a hundred times on the campus, greeting him casually, noting his fierce partisanship in our fights with 1915 and his good-natured smile in moments of relaxation, hardly prepares us for the shock of his unexpected death.

The editor asks class secretaries to keep their class notes brief and concise, so these will be supplemented by a Balrnacaan letter soon. But to bring you up-to-date on what the Class has been doing, "Tug" (Mr. Golf)Tyler was in Washington recently on his annual tour of country clubs, and spent a night with the Wilsons. I was sorry I am not a golfer, so I could understand Tug's expert lecture on everything from your shoulder muscles to the 19th hole.

Jim Coffin has taken to mountain climbing, and ascended Mt. Adams over Columbus Day weekend, in imitation of Chris's exploration. He found a fine view and a use for Sloan's Liniment, I gather.

No word at this writing from Jack English and Kay relative to their trek to Indiana and return via Canada. Also, no word from the McAuliffe yet on the doings in football. Maybe Jawn is too depressed and no wonder.

I don't believe I mentioned Justus (Dutch)Doenecke's letter from Oak Bluff, Mass., where he went with his family for their annual stay on Martha's Vineyard Island. Dutch was having time to cogitate on old times in a nostalgic but entertaining way.

The Boston chapter of the national barbershopping quartet society with the long name had a visitors' night. Jack English was the guest of the Old Timers quartet, a group of old gentlemen whose total ages total about the same as the national debt. I have heard them sing and they are still plenty good, although their first appearance was to entertain the troops at Valley Forge during that tough winter. Jack was still glowing.

Commenting on the untimely death of AlGlueck, that indefatigable letterwriter, CapCarey mentions a set of reunions in Milwaukee with Al and the McAuliffe, when Al was on a trainee program with the Pabst Brewery and Jawn was coaching Marquette's football team. At that time Al was given a personally conducted tour of the big local packing company. When the manager showed Al the Tripe Department, a very large room, he said innocently: "I didn't know you handled fish." "Handled what?" asked the startled manager. "Fish," said Al. "Where do you think tripe comes from?" asked the manager. "Why," replied Al, "you catch them somewhere in the Mediterranean, don't you? When I was at Dartmouth there was a song about 'When we were trolling for trembling tripe in treacherous Tripoli." " I won't try to gild that lily.

Shorty Shaw, having won out over an attack of gout, and having assisted the doctors at the hospital, we are hoping for news of his steady improvement in health, and we know that Cap and Kay Shaw between them will keep the Class informed.

Russ Perkins, former Naval officer and now a civilian lawyer, is now living in Cathedral City, Calif., which reminds me that one of those long and informative letters from LouisBell is about due. Louis was keeping as many jobs going as a juggler keeps tennis balls bouncing.

Perc Burnham and wife Aline had dinner with Hank Blaney and Marian at the home of the latter in Bothell, outside Seattle, and Hank reports Perc contemplating retirement and looking over places on the Olympic Peninsula.
