Al Jacks, by profession a purveyor of news, has recently made news himself. Seems he is one of six fortunate newsmen to be awarded Reid Foundation foreign travel fellowships for 1952. Al, Syracuse correspondent for the Associated Press, whose byline on stories from Central and Northern New York has been featured in newspapers from coast to coast, plans to study problems facing the European nations in their efforts to rebuild their economies. He expected to leave around February 1.
Just to refresh memories, Al began newspaper work joining the Utica Daily Press in '38, thence to the AP in '46 in Albany covering legislative and political news. From there in '49 to Syracuse with headquarters in the newsroom of the Herald Journal. During the war he served as a Major in the Signal Corps in Europe being discharged with the rank of Lt. Colonel, which rank he holds in the reserves. His French-born wife Michele and 15month-old son will accompany him on the trip. The fellowships each carrying a grant of $5000 are provided through the foundation set up by the late Ogden Reid, editor of the New York Herald Tribune. Our best wishes go with them and it sounds like a good break for two deserving people.
Accompanying the article this month we have a recent photo which adorned the cover of a publication, The New HampshireChurchman, which is put out monthly by the Bishop and Executive Council of the Diocese of New Hampshire. The November issue was forwarded to this HQ by the alert Bill Rotch who also pointed out that Rev. Elsom Eldridge is more or less responsible for its publication. We find our own Venerable Rog Barney conferring with the Bishop and he leads an extremely busy and varied life seeing to the preparation and recording of the Sunday morning radio program, Mountain Mission byMail, plus making regular seasonal calls far and wide to people who cannot be conveniently ministered to by any local parish. Also it is said that Archdeacon Barney can get more words on a penny (2<f) postcard than any living person, to which this department can attest. We might add that his closest competitor is Will Brown, who (it is alleged) once inscribed a whole year's notes on one rhododendron leaf.

Dana Prescott never got assigned to Baltimore like he thought but ended up in the Pentagon in the office of Assistant Chief of Staff for three years. Incidentally, that brings up a story about Dana—seems last summer wife Kay had finally prevailed on your scribe to fix up the kids' room with a complete paint and paper job and I was in process of hanging paper when friend Prescott and family rolled into our yard on their vacation tour, having just returned from Iran. Naturally, there was reason for much hearty handshaking etc. but no—Bankart had just climbed up the ladder with a wet, pasty roll when they walked in the door and didn't dare even look around for about ten minutes, just sort of blurbed out a meek hello and concentrated on that roll until it was on. So Dana had just returned from several years out of the country plus a number of excellent side trips to parts of Europe and was loaded with experiences some of which he then related. Couple of months later we get his questionnaire back and under the paragraph where it says "What did you do this summer of interest?" he answers, "Watched Bankart paste paper on a wall!"

May we ask again for any further news and any pictures you might have as the class, as a group, apparently did not go in for family Christmas card photos this past season? BillTimber's was the only one, but the ALUMNI MAG. insists on having a picture showing the Dartmouth parents, just the kiddies will not do. Thanks anyway.
