Walter Fred Duffy died July 5 after several years of progressive illness. Your secretary called on him May 10 and was shocked at his physical condition which had degenerated markedly since a visit one year earlier.
Duffey is said to have been the wealthiest man in Franklin and one of the wealthy men in New Hampshire. He owned several plants in the Franklin area making knitting needles and also a plant knitting stockings.
A rather complete story of his career appears in the In Memoriam section of this issue. I here are now twelve living members of our class.
Two others of our 1896 group have passed away. The information reached your secretary too late to be included in the June issue.
Mrs. Lillian Edgerly died in New Rochelle, N. Y„ February 5, 1953, after a rather long illness with arthritis. She was born Sarah Lillian Swett in Pittsfield, N. H., March 15, 1871. She was graduated from Wellesley in 1896. She was a loyal member of her class, attending all the reunions except her fifty-fifth when she was physically unable to attend.
She married our classmate, Dr. J. Winslow Edgerly, April 2, 1902. Dr. Edgerly died in 1935. As a doctor's wife her ministrations were numberless, supplying food for the body and courage for the soul. She was very active in the Presbyterian Church —a member of one church for 51 years. She was also very active in the Daughters of the Revolution, holding offices at local, state and national levels.
She leaves two sons, Dr. Winslow S. and Dr. Sherburn E.; a daughter, Atilla, Mrs. Albert Gantz; and four grandchildren. As a clergyman's wife, Atilla continues her mother's devotion to the church.
Lillian will be sorely missed in her family and by her many friends. Her life was filled with good deeds.
Martha Plumer died in Florida May 8, 1953, following a stroke of paralysis suffered three weeks earlier. The burial was in the family cemetery in North Conway, N. H., on May 11.
She was born Martha Shackford Hale, January 2, 1871, in Conway, N. H. She married our classmate, William B. Plumer, October 14, 1896. William died October 26, 1933. Their home was in Melrose Highlands, Mass. A daughter Eleanor (Mrs. Rudolph C. Sadler) is their only child. She lives at 2021 North Broadway, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
