The opportunity for faculty and administrative staff members to get together informally as a group has been increased this year by the institution of a faculty coffee hour held periodically in Dartmouth House in the late afternoon. The second such gathering was held on January 23 in conjunction with the annual winter meeting of the Board of Trustees. John R. McLane '07, clerk of the Board, spoke briefly on behalf of the Trustees, who then had a chance to meet with staff members during the social hour that followed. The first coffee hour was held in December at which time Justin A. Stanley '33, Vice President of the College, spoke on the work of the Dartmouth Development Council.
The 14th annual session of Hanover Holiday will be held June 15-18 and will present a series of lectures on the general topic of "The North American Arctic," it has been announced by Prof. Herbert W. Hill, director of the "alumni college." Last June, Hanover Holiday dealt with the Arts and Sciences. This year's program will tie in with developments described in the lead article in this issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
With Baker Library still first among the undergraduate college libraries in the country in the size of book stock, recent statistics reveal that it now ranks 26th among all the university and college libraries in the United States. Baker will soon reach the 700,000 mark in the number of volumes it possesses.
The Friends of the Dartmouth Library, responsible for many of the fine and rare volumes in Baker's collections, has announced the formation of a Publications Committee. It will issue a hitherto unpublished poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson entitled Indian Superstition. Written when he was an 18-year-old student at Harvard, the poem is an important part of the record of Emerson's development as poet and thinker. It will be edited by Kenneth W. Cameron, Professor of English at Trinity College. Victor Reynolds '27, head of the Cornell University Press, is chairman of the Friends' new Publications Committee.
