July 1953 DONALD BROOKS '17,

FROM those who attended our delayed 35th to those who couldn't make it, the word is -"Don't miss our 40th!" We heard and enjoyed all the stories of the Presidential commencement and then proceeded to show that Seventeen was UP. 75 men, 48 wives and 3 offspring were housed in Gile and Butterfield. Our first group meeting was for cocktails and a buffet supper in the tent in front of Gile, followed by a reception for alumni and their wives held in the perfect setting of President Dickey's garden. There was an Alumni Dance but, let's face it, we've reached the age where we would rather sit in the tent and drink beer.

Saturday was hot-but we wonder if any other class picture showed three generations. We proudly point to Bill Sewall, his son John and John's son and daughter and Arch Gile, his daughter Joy Caveney and Pete and Bill. Then on to the Alumni Luncheon for men and wives in the Gym, after which those who could stand the heat were rewarded by a fine short speech by President Dickey.

The Class dinner took place Saturday evening at Thayer Hall with Gil Swett presiding. Scotty Rutherford Jr. spoke briefly as an undergraduate representative followed by BillMcCarter. Old Dartmouth chairs were presented to the retiring officers, Karl Koeniger and Howie Stockwell. The most surprised class member was your ex-treasurer who received a beautiful clock that he feels is completely undeserved but will cherish in memory of twenty-six years of cooperation from his classmates.

While the men attended their class dinner the ladies enjoyed a social dinner at the Outing Club and a fair proportion of the class braved the heat to be rewarded by a brilliant performance of Mister Roberts, given in Webster Hall by The Dartmouth Players. Many of us had seen the play in New York but not even the stifling atmosphere could deaden our enthusiasm.

On Sunday morning we held our Class Meeting and voted to contribute $1,000 to the Class Memorial Fund and $250 to the Alumni Fund in memory of deceased classmates. Pete Olds, chairman of the nominating committee, presented the following slate which was voted by those present:

Secretary Don Brooks; Chairman of the Executive Committee Sumner Emerson; Treasurer Vic Smith; Class Agent BillEaton; Memorial Fund Chairman - Gil Swett; and Editor of the "Sentry" Hank Loudon. Executive Committee members, in addition to the Chairman: Don Brooks, Jim Durkee,Bill Eaton, Arch Gile, Mose Hutchins, HankLoudon, Len Reade, Jack Saladine, Walt Sisson, Vic Smith, Gil Swett and Doc Walters.

At the close of the Class meeting Miss Charlotte Ford, Alumni Recorder, who has been extremely helpful to the class officers was presented with a traveling clock as a token of appreciation.

We then took off for the Outing Club for our final lunch and found that Miss Gill had set up tables on the shore o£ Occom Pond where, at least, there was a semblance of shade - it was still hot! Good food, good company and, as people started to say good-bye, we were glad that it would be only four years until our next. How about giving a thought to Rump Reunions during Hanover Holiday Week?

Highlights: Our 17-year old daughter of 1917 Judy Reycro£t-who burst from her car clamoring for a golf game and never dropped below high C on the whole weekend, bless her; music by Helen Baxter and Marie Swett with a reprise of our old favorites; the warm beer that spurted in all directions; our favorite bartender who works at the Mayo Clinic on the side; the room-hopping from basement to fourth floor in Gile and Butterworth; the constant visits from Eighteeners who liked our beer (the difference between '17 beer and '18 beer-we had some); our pleasure in seeing fellows who came from distant places for this so-called 35th Reunion such as Sam White from Seattle, Perc Streeter from Canada, Doc Walters from Minnesota, Hank Bomgardner from Nebraska (his first time back in 36 years) and Charley Wolff from Cuba.

A new address list of class members has been prepared and was given out to all registering at Reunion. Copies will be mailed to class members who were unable to attend.

And now a personal word from your new secretary. This column will only be of interest if everyone cooperates by sending in information about his family, hobbies, travels, jobs and public recognition. We can't make it up you've got to start the ball rolling. So put pen to paper or dictate to your office wife and, even if the postal rates go up to don't let the new secretary down. You never were tight with your money - don't be stingy with your letters.
