The Alumni Council's first business session was held Thursday evening, June 18, in the Mt. Washington Summit House. Council members and college officers left Hanover that morning, drove to the Mountain View House in Whitefield for lunch, and ascended the mountain in two special trains of the Mt. Washington Cog Railway, also owned by the College. After supper Orton H. Hicks 'si, Council president, called to order the gathering of forty Council members and sixteen college officers. Principal speakers at this opening session were Justin A. Stanley '33, Vice President of the College in charge of the development program, who reported gifts and bequests totaling approximately two million dollars for 1952-53; and President Dickey, who reviewed the Commencement events of the previous weekend.
The main topic for Council discussion at the June meeting was Dartmouth's enrollment program. The subject was introduced Thursday night by Mr. Heston, chairman of the Committees on Admissions and Enrollment, and was then discussed by Albert I. Dickerson '30, director of admissions, and Robert K. Hage '35, executive head of the Financial Aid Office. Discussion was continued the next morning when Edward T. Chamberlain '36, executive officer of the College and secretary of the Council's enrollment committee, spoke, followed by questions and general discussion by members. The remainder of the Friday morning session was devoted to committee reports.
The wives and children of Council members and of some college officers joined the party on the summit of Mt. Washington for lunch, and early in the afternoon special Cog Railway trains took all hands down to the base station for the return motor trip to Hanover.
