The summer has been rather quiet for Dartmouth alumni in this area because of the usual vacations and long weekends but there have been a few activities to break up the boredom.
Late in May about fourteen of our members entertained a group of eleven prospective freshmen at a buffet dinner at the Country Club of Detroit. A little later the party journeyed to Briggs Stadium to catch a night game with the Yankees. The dinner was an unusual success and for awhile it even looked like the Tigers might win, but after leading for most of the ball game they managed to drop another close decision. The members of the Class of '58 from this area should feel especially well wined and dined as they were our guests at a luncheon Tuesday, September 7, to which we also invited the other local undergraduates and all the fathers involved.
Plans for a picnic for Dartmouth Club of Detroit members and their wives failed to materialize although there was considerable well-meant discussion and planning. Perhaps with this background, we can go one step further next year and really have a bang-up party. Last June the Club sponsored one of its annual stag golf outings at the Grosse Isle Country Club and we were pleased to see about 21 local alumni hooking and slicing around the course and two extra men showed up for dinner. While the overall quality of the golf was not too spectacular, Tom McMahon '50 won our only prize with a very creditable 74.
Big plans are now in the making for a combined stag golf outing and dinner with Cornell, Amherst and Williams. The affair will be held at the Country Club of Detroit at a date yet to be decided and we hope it will become an annual affair.
If there are any alumni in this area who are not on our mailing list and would like to take part in these functions, please contact PhilMoon or Dick Dickson at WO. 5-6000. In addition, there is always a good group at our weekly luncheons at Yeaman's Restaurant, 516 Howard Street.
