December 1954 JACK CHILDS, BERTRAND C. FRENCH, ROBERT J. HOLMES

Short news rations this month on account of they're publishing in this issue the list of contributors to the 1954 Alumni Fund campaign, so we'll do a shorthand job of reporting.

Reunion dates, reports Secretary BertieFrench, have been set for the first half of the week after Commencement, viz. June 12, 13, and 14. They fall on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, and I don't suppose there'd be much to stop those who desire, from staying over for Wednesday, making it a four-day affair.

Mike Readey, the Verona, N. J., flash, attended the New York meeting, and BobHolmes, Al Newton, and Bertie French, the three Boston wise men, attended the Boston meeting at which McGean, Assistant Secretary of the College, explained the set-up and offered the assistance of the College in planning the reunion. Let's get set for a big time and a big returning group.

The following are items received from Bertie, who has our thanks for his cooperation.

Chet Brett, Mike Farley, Bertie French, JimHitchcock, Bob Holmes, Sandy Hooker, PlumLeighton, Jake Mason, Al Newton, GordonWeinz, and Joe Worthen gathered at the University Club the night before the Harvard-Dartmouth game for dinner and a get-to- gether. Art Swenson was due to be present, but a virus put him in the hospital instead. The quartet became a trio due to his absence.

Hurricanes Carol and Hazel kept several classmates busy pumping out cellars and cleaning up fallen trees (what, no women?) and broken limbs, but none suffered too much damage, according to their own stories.

Gordon Weinz joined the retired group on July 1. Now he's busy trying to catch up with himself and do the things he planned to do when he retired.

Jake Mason has sold his Warner, N. H., home and at present is living at 21 Merrimack St., Concord, N. H.

Mark down these changes of address: Harold L. Andrews, 9249 Abbott Ave., Miami Beach, Fla.; Arthur J. Sporborg, Route 1, Box 348, Black Mountain, N. C. (so you up and moved back there, eh Art? What happened to Alabama?); Louis F. Wright, 1293 Main St., Brockton, Mass.

Speaking of Louie Wright: he had a serious heart attack on June 16 which paralyzed his right side and caused him to spend the summer in the Tobey Hospital at Wareham, Mass. On September 30, he was removed to the Goddard Hospital, 129 West Elm St., Brockton, where he has been making progress towards recovery. Classmates can reach him there or at the above address. We all hope you'll be getting back on your feet, Lou, and that you'll make it to the June reunion.

A letter from Buster Brown reports that he's written to Dutch Thorn about going down to Florida, but he can't make up his mind to try it, because he can't get around so well to do the things he'd like to do, and his little woman doesn't relish the heat....BunkIrwin and his charming frau called on Buster on their way back to Mt. Dora, Fla., after spending the summer in Wisconsin. Buster took a nose dive out the front door and landed on his belly; went to the hospital for X-rays, but no bones broken - only bad sprains and a general jarring of the whole system; he's getting along OK n0w.... Dot Chase called on Buster a few months ago: "She's full of the old Dartmouth spirit and apparently has done a fine job in keeping the '09 widows interested in the Fund."

Good to hear from you, Buster. In a later issue 0f this MAGAZINE, or in a Diddings, I'll report some Alumni Fund psychology that Buster has put forth.

A card from Gladys Pratt gives the word that she has settled for the winter at nil No. Victoria Park Road, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. "No shoveling snow or freezing to death for me. Prattie had so hoped to be doing this. I'm doing it for both of us."

The family of Hal Murchie, the late Chief Justice of the State of Maine, has presented an oil portrait of Hal to the state. The formal acceptance was made by Governor Cross. The portrait will hang in the State House at Augusta. Thanks to Jack Everett for sending this news item.

Dr. and Mrs. Bill Holzer and Mr. and Mrs.Ben Dudley, Rochester, N. Y., made their annual pilgrimage to Hanover in October, putting up at the Hanover Inn. Andy Scarlett '10 likely provided transportation so the two old men could get around campus. My good friend, P. Washburn Stickney 'OB, was in town about the same time and talked to Charlie Truman over the phone. Charlie wrote me that Mr. Stickney must be a very fine gentleman.

In October I took a run over to Chicago to see some of my old friends: Dick Baldwin, the official Dartmouth father, who's confined in a rest home in Libertyville, Ill. While there I stayed at the home of his son, Vinnie '23. Also spent a night with Bill Blatner '05 at his estate in Geneva, Ill., and proceeded to Barrington for a weekend with two old pals, Gus Hallberg and Hass Pynchon, erstwhile great American athlete. Took in the Dartmouth lunch at Chicago with classmate Nut Root, who paid for it, and Bub Coombs '07. Nut was carrying an umbrella and wearing overshoes, as the skies were threatening and he didn't want to take any chances. He's looking good on the roly-poly side, but he said his little woman wasn't feeling too hot. We hope the latter condition will correct itself real soon.

This does it for now. A right Merry Christmas to one and all.
