Does anyone suppose, after seeing the October issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, that Don Williams '53 won't be one of the first to read the '29 Notes in this issue? Well, we hope he finds this column more interesting, this time, than that of his own class — so here's the answer to his nagging question:
"Dear Chris: Stand aside, please, and let the proud father be the first to break into print to identify his two daughters. I'd really like to claim all four of the young ladies in the left-hand side, front row, of our 25 th Reunion picture, but I'm sure Ed and KittyHow would claim a foul if I did.
"The long-legged gal on the extreme left is our Diane, the older of our two girls, and next is her sister, Hilary. Following along to the right are Janet, Teddy and Sue How. My wife, whom the girls are said to resemble, is three rows back in the cut-off picture in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, just to the left slightly of the '29 hat which young Teddy How is holding aloft. Mrs. H. is smiling slightly in the picture, as if in anticipation of the furore her daughters were about to cause a certain member of the Class of 1953.
"The two girls almost missed the trip to the reunion, and before we left home didn't seem to care whether they went or not. It was their first trip to Hanover. Now they both fervently hope and pray it was not their last. Both have hopes of eventually attending Connecticut College, as did their mother, and talk of how nice it will be to be able to attend Dartmouth house parties.
"Needless to say, the publicity given young Mr. Williams and his remarks have thrilled the girls no end. Without doubt he is not only the Man of the Hour, but of the week, and until a worthy successor appears, of all times. Sincerely, Morry Hartman."
Another piece of correspondence relating to reunion, but which just missed the last issue, is from Jack Blair to the Class and follows:
"Through the medium of your column I would like the Class to know that the cigarette box presented me is my proudest possession and occupies a position of prominence in our living room. When I think of the toil and sacrifice by many of 1929 in the interest of the Class and College, I am certain that I do not belong among the few so honored. Nevertheless, I am grateful to be so selected. It was lots of fun to edit Twenty-Nine Up and it's nice to know that my efforts were appreciated."
"Unseeded and Untried" - that's the way the press referred to Gus Wiedenmayer and New Jersey Governor Meyner after their match last August in the New Jersey AllAmateur Men's Singles Chamnionship. Gus won incidentally, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. The press also stated that both contestants, self-styled weekend players, carried on a steady stream of banter and that the Governor called out after his second-set victory, "That's all right, I can't run either." We would guess, though, that Gus can run a little bit.
We hear that Ben Stacey, industrial analyst with the First National Bank of Boston and head of the Economics Department of Northeastern University Evening School of Business, spoke on September 13 at a meeting of the Worcester County Association of Credit Men on the subject "The National Business Situation."
We also hear that Bob Austin, Professor of Business Administration of the Harvard Business School, spoke on October 19 at the Boston Conference on Distribution on the subject "What is Competition?" Bob teaches two courses at the Business School: Legal Aspects of Business and Business Policy.
Some very interesting news and photos will have to wait for later issues because of space requirements. The following are contributors to the 1954 Alumni Fund:
