Reports emanating from the North country tell of a very successful '53 get together following the Harvard-Dart, struggle. Originally scheduled for Fxed Stephens' and TomBloomer's suite at Harvard Business School, the party had to be shifted to the dorm lobby as almost 100 '53s and another 100-odd Indians joined in the festivities. Those in attendance included Pete Hutchins, recently returned from two years of Army life in Korea; Charley Fleet; Bob Simpson, fiom Bay Shore, N. Y.; the boys in blue from Newport (Malin,Whitlemore, Lawrence, Callender); and Howie Clery, our Gillette Safety Razor representative; our thanks to Fred and Tom for their many efforts assuring the party's success.

This is the second consecutive year that the class has sponsored a cocktail-style powwow after the Harvard game. They have met with such excellent response, it seems like a pregnant thought to make this an annual class function.

Unfortunately a large percentage of the class were located far from Cambridge and the party on October 23. News from those areas.... Johnny Rice is very enthusiastic about his new Army assignment in Germany. Prior to his August departure from the U. S., he and Helen Maritz of St. Louis and Smith '54 took time off to become Mr. and Mrs. Rice in a small church ceremony on July 25. Mrs. R. has just joined Johnny abroad, and the couple are hoping to rendezvous in Paris shortly with Brock Brower, now at Oxford on his Rhodes Scholarship. Other Ft. Holabird grads, Dick Confair, Bob Chiesa, TomBradley, and Jim Zeisel received assignment to Language School in California, while DickCalkins, our treasury watch-dog, now in Hawa, must have used some class funds to obtain that choice duty. Bob Newsom and AlStover are located out on the West Coast, while Frank Joslin has been permanently assigned to Ft. Holabird, and John Bishop has elected OCS at Ft. Benning, Ga. Johnny incidentally will be joined at Benning in early '55 by Blair Law, who graduated this past June from Penn. Military College.

Another new Array arrival in Europe is 2nd It. Bob Foster, recently the proud papa of a baby boy. Bob is hoping that the Foster family will be reunited shortly, in Orleans, France. Prior to his European duty, Bob was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds where Bob Heilman and Hank Edler (both completed first-year Tuck last June) and TedSpiegel are now stationed. Hank reports his recent engagement to a "very pretty Florence Nightingale who helped nurse me back to health following an appendectomy last April." Wedding bells are scheduled to peal around Christmas. No such news from Spieg who spent the summer relaxing in Europe with Jim Cartmell.

At nearby Quantico, Perry Free has just won his 2nd louie's bar, graduating sixth in a class of 197, and is now due for five more months of training at "marineland." BobSimpson and Dick Lombard are enrolled in the November OCS class at the same Marine "factorv." Perry reports that he, Jim Decker (working for a surveying firm since June graduation from Thayer School), George High,Eric Van Shack (Army private as of August) and John Franklin managed to have a small but lively reunion blast in the Windy City this summer. George is now back at Columbia where he and roommate Mike Zarin are 2nd yr. law students, while Johnny is a medical corpsman at Ft. Campbell along with Johnny Rogers. Our apologies to the latter for locating him in the Far East in our October column. A 3rd Brooke Medical Center alumnus, Dick Ledbetter, is attending to the Army's cuts and bruises at Ft. Lewis in Washington State.

Before we become involved in connubial items, let's take a brief look at some miscellaneous news items Bill Leibovitz busy burning the midnight oil at the U. of Pa. where he's a 2nd yr. law student.... PeteKing a pre-law undergraduate at the same institution.... Bedford "Jake" Jacobs another Army 2nd It. with the title "Chemical Corps Public Info. Officer, Ft. McClellan, Ala." Jake received his sheepskin from Vanderbilt Univ., and is married to a V.U. '53 co-ed hailing from Honolulu.... John Richardson involved in CIC duty in the Chicago area. Prior to entering the service Johnny studied accounting for two yrs. at the U. of Minn, where he met his fiancee Carol Elliot '55.... Walt Patton attending 2nd yr. med classes at the U. of Tenn. following graduation from Okla. Univ. in June 1953, and apparently still a member of the rapidly dwindling bachelor group ... and lastly, word from Lowry A.F. Base in Denver that PeteDohanos spent a very busy summer, doing varied art work such as formal dinner place cards for Mamie Eisenhower at the summer White House, in addition to serving as art editor of the Air Force News and spending some time with his August bride, Marlys Gilyard of Foley, Minn. Pete is scheduled for discharge in Feb. '55, and he and Marlys then intend to come to N. Y. where Pete hopes to enter the scenic design end of the theater. And now ...

CUPID'S CORNER Way back on July 28 Irene Eisman of Newton, Mass., became Mrs. Irwin Freedberg in a wedding at Temple Israel, Boston. "Moe" Moss was best man and Tom Napoleon and Sherm Tratten ushered for Irwin, a 3rd yr. Harvard Med. student. About a month later, Tom took Irma Miller of Boston as his bride, and after a Cape Cod honeymoon, the newly-weds returned to Boston to take up residence until Uncle Sam interferes. On August 5 Margaret Owens of Cranford, N. J., said yes to Warren Smith in a late afternoon church service. Warren is employed by the N. J. Bell Telephone Co. (having served two years in the Navy before college) - and his new address is Elizabeth, N. J. Bill Dolan and Janet L. Wright exchanged wedding vows on the 15 th of the same month in nearby Newton, N. J. Mrs. Dolan is an alumna of N. J. College for Women and is presently busy helping Bill with his 2nd yr. law studies at the U. of Va.

August 28 saw both Wayne Hansen and Ens. Jay Montgomery "slide down the ways." Wayne married his Westfield High sweetheart, Kay Dodge, now of N. Y., with "sweet" Kezer '52 among the ushers. Kay, a '53 Dennison graduate, and "Hanse" are residing in N.Y.C. where he works for Chase National Bank. With Bob Nessen standing by as best man, Jay slipped the all-important' ring on the finger of Janet Lewis of Arlington, Mass., and Framingham Teachers College. At last report, the Montgomerys are living near Jay's Newport, R. I., duty station. Turning to September and a Boston paper we find a picture of Mr. and Mrs. Dick McCostis (the former Janice Friborg, Wellesley '53) following their Manchester, N. H., wedding in September. Jack Crisp and Marines Dick Thomas and Skip Thompson helped direct traffic as ushers at the big wedding. A 2nd It. in the Air Force, Dick is now stationed in Waco, Texas. Space. I fear, prevents us from but mentioning PatPatterson's marriage to Connie Elliot of Portland, Me., on August 27; Forrest Anderson's and Alice Charleston's wedding in California and their trip East to Ft. Bragg, N. C„ where the groom is stationed; and finally the September 5 wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Tangerman (the former Jan Scott of Westville, N. Y., and Mt. Holyoke). Jack has received a fellowship to McGill for Arctic studies for this academic year.

A glance now at recent betrothals indicates that this wedding column will be crowded for many months to come. Early this summer, Diane Walker of Kansas City announced her engagement to Army Private Jim Steubner. Jim West followed suit in August, with Gay Carver as the important young lady. Gay is a senior at Goucher, and we imagine that Jim is probably in khaki by now. Also in August, Curt Bury and DonHoffman checked out of bachelor ranks. Curt, back at Harvard "B" School after a summer with IBM, became engaged to a Holyoke grad, Judy Grace of Bridgeport, Conn., while Don (at Harvard Graduate School) fell prey to another Nutmegger, Barbara Rodamer, a Boston U. student. And finally September saw the engagements of Eleanor Louise Graham (Mt. Holyoke '55) to Clyde Claus; and Pamela Roberts of Worcester, Mass., and U. of Va. to Ens. Doug Cassel USN, stationed in Boston aboard the destroyer USS Furse.

Merry Christmas to one and all - and keep the news coming.
