One of the least publicized teams of the winter season has been the Dart- mouth varsity rifle squad. Under the tutelage of M/Sgt. Dexter A. Fedor, USMC, this team has gone undefeated in forty matches this year. The Big Green sharpshooters have won 37 postal matches and three shoulder-to-shoulder matches and were strong contenders for the National Rifle Association Championships held late in March.
The rifle team, which has a 9-0 record in the New England College Rifle League, posted a team score of 1439 points out of a possible 1500 in a match with Stanford. On an individual basis the Indian shooters have four men averaging above 280 points out of 300. Tom Connor, a junior from Pontiac, Mich., has a 284.57 average, while Fred Engelbach, a sophomore from Jackson-ville, Ill., has 283.29, followed by Elliott Hersey, a junior from New Boston, N. H., with 281.14 and team captain Dick Plummer, a senior from Plainfield, N. H., with 280. The individual range record of 293 is held jointly by Connor and Engelbach. Other team members include junior Ken Lundstrom, Packanack, N. J.; sophomores Charles Henry, Denver, Colo.; Robert Barry, Lansdowne, Pa.; Henry Ravenel, Chevy Chase, Md., and Carl Hilker of Port Clinton, O.; and seniors Bob Oxford, Winchester, Mass.; and Richard Barker, Arlington, Mass.
In the New England regional finals, the Dartmouth team had an off day and finished in third place behind M.I.T. and the Coast Guard. On March 19-21 the Dartmouth team was to fire at Norwich University with scores being sent to the National Rifle Association for comparison with results posted by colleges throughout the nation and the awarding of the eventual championship.
