The fates were against my getting to Hanover this year - everything happened at once. Baby sitters, automobiles and business commitments all teamed up to prevent my attending the annual Secretaries Conference on May 1. And as yet I have had no correspondence from Treasurer Stew Steffey to report. In other words, I don't know what went on and so we'll close out this year's notes with a real newsy column with as much information on as many people as I can pack into it.
Martin Nevius is living in his home town of Haddonfield, N. J., and has been a sales engineer for a plastics molder for four years. If you need any custom molding you know where to get it. Martin says he hasn't seen a classmate in years except for running into Lou Young in a diner for about five minutes. No news about twin brother John, but Martin's got three daughters which is about par for the course.
Dick Potter is getting his two sons ready for the swimming season out in Hicksville. Another Hicksville resident is F. B.I, agent Brodie Bjorklund. We had a cup of coffee downtown in New York recently and judging from his tales, Brodie's life is one busy investigation after another.
Dr. Harvey Dworken is working in Cleveland specializing in gastroenterology (wow!). Harv says he is the proud father of a daughter and is shedding crocodile tears for my Dodgers. Well if anybody in Cleveland is shedding such tears they shouldn't waste them on my club the Indians do a little heartbreaking of their own.
Two more doctors recently heard from are Doc Spillane up in Hartford and Al Ferguson in Pittsburgh. Al is at the University of Pittsburgh as associate professor of orthopedic surgery - a combined teaching, research and private practice job.
Bill Hotaling is probably back on the golf course again trying to improve on last year's 15 handicap. Bill lives in Hamden, Conn., and spent the Yale-Dartmouth football weekend last fall with Bob and Happy Koenig.
Art Hills writes from Winchester, Mass., that Dick Sawyer lives across the street and that he sees Fred Maloon, Dean Carleton, EdStone, Unk Richardson, Ed Lamer, and DickHill in and around Boston. Seem to be quite a few '41s in the area. On the other hand, BillPaddock up in Wolcott, N. Y., reports that he hasn't seen any lately. However, Bill says the alumni group meets frequently in Rochester (every other Wednesday noon).
From the home of the surprising Detroit Tigers comes a note from George Brand. George says that Bill Burgard is back in Buffalo with wife and kids. George has also been in touch with Clif Stratton, the eminent Washington attorney.
Sam Pratt is in his second year as an assistant professor of English and Humanities at Ohio Wesleyan University. Don Ross of Menlo Park, Calif., finds the D.O.C. of Northern California has a cabin in the Sierras. BillMiller is a neighbor of Don's. Skipping back to the East Coast to-Red Hook, N. Y., BudHart is associated with the Red Hook Cold Storage Co. and the F. Palmer Hart Commission firm. Bud deals in the finest New York and New England apples. Sounds wonderful!
Charlie Kazaross writes from Pawtucket, R. I., that he is still single and wonders if he's the only bachelor left in the class. I'm afraid not Charlie; there are still some others clinging to that status. How's the advertising pencil business? I suppose you've shifted now from the ski trails back to the golf links. Had any more 71's lately?
Incidentally, Charlie, one bachelor soon to leave the ranks is Len Tobias. Miss Mildred Waidelich is engaged to Len and they will soon be altar-bound. Len is a mechanical engineer with Q.E.D., Inc., of Danbury, Conn.
Hank Palmer of Salisbury, N. C., is still with Kennametal as factory representative for the two Carolinas. George Sexton, ye old fireballing right-hander, is living in Westfield, N. J. Boots Nanos, the terror of Topliff and the sweetheart of Stamford, has moved west to Dayton, Ohio (That's west?).
Lew Johnstone of Cincinnati must be very proud of the Redlegs these days. WarnerBishop was in that fair city not long ago to deliver a learned talk to the foundrymen. Lew's latest youngster, Carolyn, was born last September, making it two boys and a girl.
Dr. George Simpson completed a year of general practice in West Virginia and is now in New York specializing in dermatology. Dr.Dave Bryan is practicing in Stowe, Vt. JakeGidney, assistant treasurer of the Dartmouth Club of Cleveland, and Hal Newell, vice president of the same club, made a pilgrimage to the blood-donating center of the Red Cross and what happened is history. Hal gave up his pint with little or no effect and Jake prepared to follow suit. I guess Jake couldn't spare it - because after he passed out Hal escorted him home. Good boy, Jake, we're proud of you. Must be tougher than playing soccer.
Well that rounds out another season of class notes and my next closing is September 5 for the October issue. Let's hope that many of you take advantage of the long summer evenings to bring me up to date on your activities. I'll appreciate it and your reading will be that much better. Remember the Alumni Fund and have a fine summer.
