Thumb-nail sketches of the twelve living alumni and the two living nongraduates of the Class of 1896 follow.
Stephen Chase. ... Steve and his wife live in Dunedin, Florida during the fall and winter months on their orange and grapefruit ranch. For the late spring and summer months they migrate to their farm in Danville, Vt., where they raise gladiolus. They have developed and named many new varieties of this beautiful flower. It is their hobby.
Your Secretary had a brief visit with them in Hanover last May as they were driving to Danville. They are active and in good health.
Isaac J. Cox. ... Ike has not been well for some years. Nearly a year ago he developed cerebral thrombosis and was in a hospital in Evanston for some weeks. Early this year Ike and his wife Ruth flew to San Antonio to escape the cold weather of Evanston. Ruth's family live there. They rented a house. Their address is Box 694, Route 13, San Antonio 2, Texas. I know they would welcome letters from '96 men. Late letters indicate some improvement in his condition. Ike and Ruth hope to attend our 60th reunion next June.
Louis S. C0x. ... Louie has retired but is still active as consultant in judicial matters. He disposed of his dairy herd some years ago. Louie and his wife and daughter are in good health. We exchange letters occasionally. The Cox family resides at 7 Lowell St., Lawrence.
George Henry Davis. ... Your Secretary has called on him at his home in Concord several times. He has not seen fit to keep up contacts with the class.
Byron E. Eldred.... Byron and Gurli live in their beautiful home in Lime Rock, Conn. The stream at the foot of their home went on a rampage in the August flood, washing out their bridge and destroying their driveway. Byron is not well. Has needed a nurse for some time. We hope he will recover in time to attend our reunion next June.
Nathaniel L. Foster.... Nat cannot be called a prolific correspondent. A card from Alumni Records Department gives his address as LaPlaza Boulevard, Coconut Grove, Fla. Your Secretary's guess is that he has retired and given up his home in Montclair, N. J.
Thomas C. Ham.... I have been retired since June 1946. I now live in Arlington, Mass. I have tried to serve the class acceptably as your Secretary for nearly five years. Fortunately, I have kept in good health. My job ahead is our 60th reunion next June.
Charles A. Jaquith.... Jake lives with a farmer family at R.D., East Thetford, Vt., near his former home in Union Village. I exchange letters with him occasionally. He is quite deaf and has poor eyesight. Most of his former friends have passed away or cannot get around. He is very lonesome. He would appreciate a letter.
George E. Lake.... George is the oldest member of our class. He was born June 13, 1866, so is now in his 90th year. He has long since retired from the ministry. He and his wife live at 1180 College Ave., Claremont, Calif. In his last letter he said he was in good health and able to tend his garden.
Harry D. Lakeman. ... Dan has not been well for some years. At our reunion in 1951 he said he would have to resign as Class Secretary because he found it difficult to write, and your present Secretary was elected to succeed him. The burden of caring for the home and driv- ing the car falls on Margaret. Margaret's mother has lived with them until a few months ago, when it seemed necessary to put her in a rest home.
We certainly hope that Dan and Margaret will be at our 60th reunion.
Lindley G. Palmer. ... During all the years since 1896 I do not think Lindley has answered a single letter. The Palmers have five fine sons. The oldest is president of Marshall Field, Chicago. A brief story of the sons was published in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE some two years ago. It would be wonderful if he would be with us at our reunion.
Herbert A. Warden. ... A very good story of Herbert and his career with a recent photograph appeared in the March 1955 issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Herbert has been Mayor of Newburgh, N. Y., for over fifteen years and still holds the job. He and Minnie live in a new ranch type house at 12 Jamison Place. A new residential development in Newburgh carries his name.
The two nongraduate members are: CharlesP. Dimick and Robert Frost Charles lives alone at 219 Harvard St., Brookline. Mrs. Dimick passed away in August 1954. For some years Charles has had to take it easy because of a heart condition. He has told me that he has provided in his will for a bequest to Dartmouth.
Robert Frost, our most widely known and distinguished classmate, is recipient of four Pulitzer prizes and honorary Doctorate of Laws from Dartmouth last June. A great teacher - a beloved poet.
Our 60th reunion will be held next June. I hope all who can come will be there.
