I can't believe it, but it's time to write you another of these columns, and this one as a Christmas present. You know, the Alumni Office has been sending calendars to the class officers the last few years, and it's only just now dawned on me why they've done it: I just looked very closely at the numbers, and, upon my word, they've gone and dropped Wednesday and Thursday right plumb out of the middle of every week! That makes today about the day before yesterday, as near as I can figure - and it also means those conniving people up in Hanover have gone and invented a new way to get us to send the copy for these columns in on time. But I expect their shrewdness might just backfire along about the next Equinox - because by that time I'll be so off-phase that I'll be writing the Class of 1956 column instead, and what a clamor there'll be about that!

Well, news comes before everything, I suppose, and I will transcribe herewith the notes which came to me in various stages of disarray during the Dartmouth-Yale game last week. The score was Yale 20, Dartmouth o, your columnist minus 6. (But only for two hours after dinner, I want you to understand.) However, between sorrows which were duly drowned, are the following tidbits:

George Baird about to go to Newport for Justice School and thence to San Diego to "attack" Squadron 116. Baby girl, October 9. Also informs that John Springer finished jet training and went to Cherry Point. Tom.Croft is finishing basic training and will soon be going to advanced training in Corpus Christi. Dan Boyd finishing pre-flight at Pensacola, Fla.

Phil Metzidakis dropped in at the dorm a few days ago. He's just back from Salamanca, Spain, where he was teaching English and studying philology for thirteen months. He's now at the Yale Grad. School studying for his doctorate. In Spain, Phil earned the equivalent of his M.A. He tells me that PrasongSukhum has gone back to Siam.

Fred Wolf finally married Jean Forbes Spiro in Upper Montclair on October 1; and we can announce the same formally about GilShapiro and Frima Lee Goldman of Lewiston, Me., on August 28.

Other clippings announce that Fred Hitt, recently out of the Marines, is at U. Conn. Law School in Hartford. Chuck Luker was recently commissioned a ad lieutenant in the infantry, after graduating O.C.S. at Ft. Benning. Bart Zanelli is now a first-year student at U. Va. Law School, and just out of service. Bob Jetter was addressing Rotary Clubs in the Amsterdam, N. Y., area lately, after returning from a year's study at the University of Munich, on a German Government scholarship.

Barron Schoder formally reported married to Virginia Ann Owen on October 8 in Decatur, Ill. The bride's a Smith girl.... EliotRobinson also married in September to Elaine Osband of Rochester, N. Y., and Smith College.

Tom Gill is engaged to Cecilia Lewis of Norwich, Vt. Tom's fiancee is a nurse in Bennington, Vt.

Bill Andre was a member of the U. S. modern pentathlon team who were training in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, for the world championships in Berne, Switzerland, at the end of October. No word on how the boys made out.

Robert Simpson completed Basic at Quantico in September. John Rogers is out of the service, and was about to enter U. Mass. for a Landscape Architecture degree. Lefty Leavens was to marry Doris McCartney, a Cleveland high school teacher, on the mountain top where he proposed to his bride. The wedding was to take place in church August 27, and a second ceremony was to take place on Seneca Rocks the next day.

Gardner T. Brookings is engaged now to Jane Watson of Great Barrington, Mass., and a graduate of Russell Sage and Katherine Gibbs in N. Y.

Mike Zarin is now engaged to a very sweet little girl, Renee Kroll, of the Bronx. Renee is working for a M.A. in early childhood education at Teachers College, Columbia. Mike is now vice chairman of the Columbia Legal Aid Committee.

Letters now: Emil Schnell now out of the Marines, working for Western Electric as a staff trainee in the Purchasing and Traffic Division. Working for Western Electric also are Clint Mason and Burgh Taylor '52. Emil sees other Dartmouth men around, foremost of whom is Bob Koenig '41. Emil also reports his forthcoming January marriage to Carol Liefsen of Flushing, N. Y. Honeymoon will be in Bermuda, he says. Also says he spent Labor Day weekend in Hanover with fiancee at the home of Professor Stone.

Reported once in awhile at Lejeune with Emil during the past year were Gus Hulman (discharged now a month) and Warren Cassidy.

Bud Cherry was supposed to drop in Yale weekend, but guess he got waylaid. Was on his way first to Manchester, N. H., tor the wedding of Ed Johnson to Betty Hill, Skidmore '53 He's looking around for post-service job opportunities now.

Eliot Robinson now writes in person that at Newport he ran into John Kennedy and Charley Fleet. At the September 13 wedding in Rochester, Ralph Lash was among the ushers. Buzz D'Avanzo was unable to attend because he was at sea with the U.S.S. Capricornus (AKA 57) in the Atlantic. Eliot is now at Athens, Ga., with Elaine. He and Charley are studying at the Naval Supply School. Larry Barnett also expected soon from O.C.S. Elaine is now an instructor in math at the U. of Ga. Eliot also reports that Ralph Lash is the father now of a second son, Geoffrey David Lash, and Buzz DAvanzo is engaged to a gal named "Sue" from Memphis.

John Dickason writes from Ft. Dix that he and wife Bobbie had a hectic summer with some serious illness in the family, during which John learned to be an expert cook (this is not his characterization). Now all is fine, for which we send thanks. At Ft. Dix, other '53s to turn up are Tom Frenzel, back from five months of TDY on his way to Camp Drum, N. Y., and on his way out of service; Jack Newton, on his way from Audit Agency Service in New York to Greenland, on three weeks' TDY. John also reports his son saw the H-D game on TV but wasn't so impressed.

And, Dick Joslin writes to announce the birth of Frank Richardson Joslin III on September 18. He reports his wife says she learns more about her Wellesley classmates by reading our ALUMNI MAGAZINE columns than from her own class publications. (All the ALUMNI MAG writers are pleasantly surprised, and thank you!) Dick due out in July 1956, and now is an instructor at Ft. Holabird, a vocation which he is enjoying, though it's connected with Service. Reports the following "passed through": Sandy Farmer, who left for Europe October 1. I thought there'd be more, but that's the end of the letter.

And the column, too. Merry Christmas.
