This year's Christmas luncheon, held annually for the benefit of applicants and their fathers, was one of the most successful affairs the Dartmouth Club of Cleveland has promoted in recent years. Despite the fact it was held on a week-day, Wednesday, December 29, a crowd of 300 applicants, fathers and alumni gathered in the Pine Room of the Statler Hotel. President Dave Johnson proved to be a competent toastmaster in introducing the speakers.
Dean of Freshmen, Stearns Morse, was the principal speaker. He provided his audience with a clear and interesting analysis of the social problems at Dartmouth and problems the College has had to face by reason of increased applications and overcrowding. An interesting father-and-son speaking combination at this year's luncheon was Paul Brown, coach and general manager of the World's Champion Cleveland Browns, and his son Mike, a sophomore at Dartmouth. Although all of us would like to have heard Paul Brown discuss football, he confined his remarks to his impressions of Dartmouth from the viewpoint of the father of an undergraduate. In fact he confessed that he had wanted to attend Dartmouth himself. The Dartmouth Club could scarcely have chosen a more enthusiastic Dartmouth supporter.
Mike Brown gave a humorous and interesting insight into current undergraduate life in Hanover. Bob Jeavons, co-chairman of the interviewing committee, ably described the selective process and acquainted the applicants with the type of classmates they could expect to find at Dartmouth. The program was rounded out by the showing of two out-of- door films, Dartmouth Outdoors and Operation Jack Frost.
Our annual banquet is scheduled for March 11 at the University Club, and the Dean of Faculty, Donald Morrison, will be the principal speaker. He will also speak at the luncheon for high school principals and guidance counselors to be held at noon on March 11.
The Club will continue to hold its weekly luncheons Friday noons at the Midday Club in the Union Commerce Building, and all alumni, both local and out-of-town, are welcome.
