During the month of March our club was doubly favored. Charles T. Garnsey '20 of Miami was elected to the Alumni Council, and on March 14 and 15 we were visited by Secretary and Mrs. Sidney C. Hayward '26 and Mr. and Mrs. Donald C. McKinlay '37, national director of the Alumni Council's committee on enrollment, who came here all the way from their home in Denver, Colo.
On March 14 Mr. Hayward and several Club members visited the local high schools and spoke with vocational directors.
On the afternoon of March 15 Mr. Hayward and Mr. McKinlay met with the nineteen south Florida high school seniors who have applied for admission next fall. The boys plied their hosts with questions and seemed very eager to learn about the Big Green. Refreshments were served and a very successful meeting it was.
That evening 61 alumni, wives and guests turned out to welcome the Haywards and the McKinlays to Florida at a dinner held in Miami Beach's beautiful Flamingo Hotel. During introductions of each alumnus it was noted that Roy M. Owen '06 was the oldest graduate present, and that John S. Hart '52 was the youngest - a span of some 46 years separating their careers at Dartmouth. AllanGottschaldt '18 made the announcement that "Chuck" Garnsey '20 had been elected to the Alumni Council, representing the Southeast. This is an honor shared by Chuck and our Club, and we all are most appreciative.
In addition to a large contingent of regular members there were several winter visitors: Wilbur Taylor '10 and Whitney Eastman '10 from Minneapolis; Bud Hoban '12, New London, N. H.; J. B. Wallace '28, from Maplewood, N. J.; Tom Groves '18 and Hal Bowman 46.
Singing was led by Prof. Maurice Longhurst, who is now a permanent member of our Club. The palm trees swayed to the rhythm of Dartmouth's In Town Again and As theBacks Go Hearing By.
Don McKinlay gave a talk concerning the enrollment of Dartmouth students from a world-wide area. This serious subject was enlivened with bits of dry humor. Mrs. Hayward welcomed Dartmouth wives, mothers and sweethearts to the friendly environs of Hanover. Mr. Hayward delivered a talk which brought us all intimately in touch with our school and the problems it faces in this modern day.
President Ed Hodgson '42 presented Mr. Hayward and Mr. McKinlay with life-time membership cards so that if they really got "sand in their shoes," they will be right at home in the Dartmouth Club of South Florida.
IN LOS ANGELES Prof. Herbert F. West '22 was guest of honor and speaker at a dinnermeeting of the Alumni Association of Southern California.
