Alumni Fund Seeks 70%
AT the midway point in its campaign for a minimum o£ 1700,000, the 1955 Dartmouth Alumni Fund had achieved better than half of its goal and was rolling along with substantial gains over 1954 in both total amount and number of contributors. The figures on May 16 were $384,233 from 8,980 contributors, or gains of $46,217 in dollars and 1,155 in contributors over the totals on the comparable date last year.
If the margin in contributors can be maintained, the Dartmouth Alumni Fund has a chance to post an alumni participation record of 70%, the first time any college has reached such a level of fund achievement. From now until the 1955 campaign ends on June 30, the class agents will make every effort to realize this unprecedented spread of alumni support, along with the year's dollar objective.
In a report presented at the annual meeting of alumni officers in Hanover on May 7, Nichol M. Sandoe Jr. '45, executive secretary of the Alumni Fund, emphasized the Fund's history of growth and said that "the record of the past has been accomplished in such a way that optimistic hopes for the future were never more justified." Participation, which now has a chance to reach the long-desired figure of 70%, has grown from 536 contributors in 1915 to 18,000 alumni, parents, widows and friends last spring. Every single gift by an alumnus is of the greatest importance this year, he stressed, and from now until June 30 the Fund directors and the class agents will be out to recapture for Dartmouth the alumni participation leadership it held continuously until last year, when Princeton edged Dartmouth 67.9% to 67.7%, by a margin of 59 gifts.
