An article from The Boston Sunday Globe describes the development of a new instrument for the control of glaucoma under Dave Cogan's directorship at the Howe Laboratory of the Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary. "Tonography" is the name given the newly-developed means of measuring the working of the outflow system of the eye — its importance lying in the ability to discover and eliminate, in time, the building-up of pressure within the eye which results in destruction of the optic nerve. The article further states that "tonography stations" are being established in various party of the country. Dave's efforts are indicated from the following quotation from this article — "Behind the Howe Laboratory," says Dr. Cogan, "is the philosophy of bringing the basic sciences into clinical medicine. It is not possible to wrap up a problem in the hospital and take it to a medical school laboratory The basic scientists must be on the spot where the patients are accessible. Chemistry, physiology, optics and pathology must be brought to the patient."
Those of you who are interested in digging out the June 30 issue of "Business Week" at your Public Library, will find an excellent article on Hal Hirsch and his White Stag products. The article is in the marketing section and is entitled "West Coast Life Sets Styles for Play Togs." The article includes some excellent photographs of Hal and his family.
Mention was made, in the notes of the June issue of the MAGAZINE, of the various tracts of land which Bob Monahan supervises for the College. It has since come to our attention that the 6,000 acre timberland tract, then known as the Gardner Forest, has been named the "John F. Gile Memorial Forest" in memory of the late Doctor Gile '16. Quoting from the news release from the College "The Board of Trustees formally approved the naming of the College's newly acquired forest in honor of Dr. Gile because of his life-long dedication to Dartmouth College, his deep interest in timber management, his great love for the out-of-doors, and his long medical service to rural patients which made for him a host of friends throughout the 'North Country.' "
As we start a new Magazine "year," with this issue, your secretary again expresses the hope that you will drop him a line when and if you have some information about yourselves or classmates that would be of interest to the rest of us (wives are "permitted" to send such information, by the way) and we are particularly interested, for the record, in vital statistics, changes in jobs or promotions, address changes — both business and home, and in what is happening to your children or grandchildren. A few address changes, not previously recorded, are as follows: Shu Hsien Chang has reported a new home address at 3040 Idaho Ave., N.W. (Apt. 206), Washington 16, D. C.; Ed Heister has reported a new home address at 4 Sunset View Drive, Pittsburgh 39, Pa., and we're wondering, Ed, if Anne is going to William and Mary College this fall; Fred Ingram has reported a new home address at 9 Windy Crest Road, Beaver Falls, Pa.

Middle-of-the-summer news brings word that Tom Capalbo and Bob Monahan are both throwing their hats into the political ring — Cap is seeking the democratic nomination for state senator against four other candidates and Bob has filed as a Republican for one of the four seats to which Hanover is entitled in the House of Representatives. Cap has never before been a candidate for a legislative post but served from 1951 to 1953 as assistant United States Attorney. Bob was the GOP candidate from Hanover in the 1955 special election.

This past summer, the Saturday magazine of The New York World-Telegram and Sun carried an article about Lowell Pratt entitled "In Sports, Too, We're Do-It-Yourself Fans." One of the many things pointed out is the fact that Lowell's A. S. Barnes & Co. publishes more books on sports than any other publisher in the world. Lowell, detecting a rising interest in sports, especially among servicemen, in 1939, began the publishing of howto-do-it books on sports at that time.
