SUMMER WORK
October 1956

While the most eye-catching construction in Hanover this summer was the new underground steam pipe (see page 24), the College at the same time was carrying forward other projects that normally would have been a heavy program in themselves.

Among these projects were the addition to Thayer Hall, student dining center; the building of two new faculty apartment units; a pointing of the brickwork on Bartlett Hall; and, farther afield, more work on the trails and base area for "Dartmouth Skiway" at Holt's Ledge in Lyme, N. H. To these major undertakings, shown here in pictures, were added dozens of smaller plant projects.

An aerial view of "Dartmouth Skiway" at Holt's Ledge shows two main trails ready for snow cover. At lower right are parking areas where clearing and fill-in work were done this summer. Last month work began on the base lodge in the larger area shown.

One of two new faculty apartment units being built on North Park Street, in College Park. Ten three-bedroom apartments in all will probably be ready for occupancy next month.

The addition to Thayer Hall, extending to the west. A comer of the Psi U house can be seen at right. Behind schedule, the enlarged dining hall will not be ready for use until sometime after Thanksgiving.

For most of the summer Bartlett Hall wore a criss-cross of scaffolding while workmen pointed its 1891 brickwork.
