Once in a while a class secretary gets some mail from classmates. Five letters in the morning, first delivery about our classmates. Dr. Roy Ward makes choice o£ this month's report easy. Clippings about him from the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Worcester Telegram and other papers read: Worcester man chosen Mass. Doctor o£ Year - Hails modern medicine, Dr. Roy J. Ward of Worcester named general practitioner of the year - State medical group honors Dr. Roy Ward - 81-year-old Worcester Physician, State Practitioner of year. From these news items there stands out these facts: Dr. Ward served in both wars; in World War I as Captain in the Medical Corp; in World War II as a member of the National Guard; and in 1919 and 1920 was called to duty during the Boston Police Strike.
He was first to inoculate children against diphtheria and one of his early projects was a drive for production of clean milk. The Medical Society eventually voted to establish a Medical Milk Commission with Dr. Ward serving as secretary and executive officer for many years. He was chairman of the Massachusetts Medical Society Committee on Public Health for eight years and in 1954 received a 50-year membership pin.
He first started practice in Barrington, N. H., and soon after this start, he returned to Hanover to marry Mary Downing. The couple settled in Barrington where Dr. Ward served on the School Board. Three years after starting to practice he attended the N. Y. Post Graduate Hospital for a refresher course and then settled in Worcester in 1904. He joined the Mass. Medical Society the same year.
The Medical Society in announcing its award cited the veteran doctor as one who had made the country a better place to live and who has contributed greatly to the welfare of the city.
What more can be said of him? We all want to say to him, Roy, we are proud of you and may you have many more years in the profession which you have honored.
