THE annual report of Richard W. Morin '24, Librarian of the College, contains the information that for the academic year 1954-55 some 14,600 volumes were added to the College's libraries, bringing total holdings to nearly 740,000 volumes. Of this total about 95 per cent is in the central Baker Library which houses 708,000 volumes including the Medical Library of 30,000. The Tuck School library has a separate collection of 19,000 volumes and the Thayer School library has another 12,000.
Expenditure of books funds for central library acquisitions in 1954-55 came to $77,000. Mr. Morin points out that while Baker Library in 1935-40 was 17th among academic libraries in average annual expenditure for books and periodicals, it was in 33rd place for the 1945-50 period. Despite this change in relative position on the basis of total expenditures, Dartmouth is exceeded only by Harvard, Yale, Columbia and perhaps the University of California in endowment resources for the purchase of books, according to the report.
