We might call this issue of the class notes "The Builders' Column" because, well, you will see. Steve Dietz is building a house on the waterfront at Mamaroneck Harbor, N.Y. Steve hopes to move in May first. His address will continue to be Shore Acres Drive as at present but this time he'll be on the shore, not in the acres.
Steve Styles, executive with Morley-Murphy Hardware' Mfg. in Green Bay, Wis., has been building an addition to his home to provide a little more room for his wife, Mable, and their three daughters.
Dang Scherman, Life magazine photographer, is building on High Tor at Haverstraw, N.Y. You may recall High Tor from the days Burgess Meredith played the lead in Maxwell Anderson's play of the same name. That was 1936; or you may be dramatically up to date with Bing Crosby's performance in this play a month ago on T.V. Anyway, it's the same beautiful spot ... "A section of the broad flat traprock summit of High Tor, from which one looks out into sky and from which one might look down a sheer quarter mile to the Tappan Zee be10w...."
If you fellows want a professional adviser in the architectural business check Bud Horn. He sells advertising space for the leading magazine in the architectural field, Architectural Record. This is a division of F. W. Dodge Corp. As might be expected, Bud is busy in spare time remodeling and restoring a seventeen-room, 150-year-old house that he and Allene bought about two years ago on Staten Island, N.Y. They have fixed up the original deep fireplaces, put in pine panels judiciously and are still in the joys of improvement. Bud's wife was the former Allene Stover, a Bradford College coed. They have four children, Stephanie, 10, Granville, 9. Harry M. 3rd, age 4, and Meredith, 2, and a 200-pound St. Bernard. Incidentally, J. D.Horn '39 is Bud's brother.
Pep and Ricki Mintz have restored an old house on Hardscrabble Road in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. They had a housewarming party a few weeks ago: guests included Rayand Peg Reitman, Gene and Liv Anspach,Seymour and Mimi Sims, Monroe and AdeleGreenbaum, Norb and Pic Hofman, Art andLee Wasserman and Ed Reich '35 and his wife.
Other builders in the class are Dink Gidney,Tom Allen, Boyce Price and Ralph Martin. Dink Gidney is remodeling an old house at Bridgehampton, L.I., with a barn being made into a guest house. This is for summer living for Dick and Olive. Tom Allen has been fixing up a house in Chappaqua, N.Y., to fit the needs of his five children as well as his wife, the former Ruth Smith of Cleveland College and Western Reserve U. Boyce Price is about to move into a new house in Pound Ridge. Conn., which he has been building for several months. Ralph Martin is moving down to the waterfront at Rockville Center, N.Y., into a new house about five blocks from the old one he bought in 1943 on the same street. We haven't heard from Ralph in a long time, but find he married his Carnival date, Virginia Brochu, then of New Jersey College for Women. They have a son Teddy, 14 years old. Ralph is general manager of the Sheffield Farms plant in the Bronx. He started at 4 a.m., July 7, 1936, delivering milk for Sheffield Farms in Newark, N.J. Ralph says the horse's name was "Buster." So much for "The Builders' Column."
Baby announcements this month have brought good news not only about the infants but about classmates as well. Gene Kern and his Vassar bride, the former Rosemary Messner from the Class of '39, are really in the baby-business with two under two years. The newbaby is Gene Jr. The one-year-old is Jonathan and there are also Robin and Chris who are a little older. Gene is chief of the New York office of the Voice of America. In 1946 Gene returned to the Voice in New York where he served successively as radio producer and commentator, political analyst, chief of the English Service, chief of production of all Voice of America operations and assistant program manager. He joins Christopher Mills Brown who is 2 years old. Gordon, in addition to being a busy doctor, is an assistant professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He says his most frequent Dartmouth contact is DonCampbell '46 who lives next door.
On January 26 Thomas Day Creigh was born to John and Beverly Creigh of Northfield, Ill....Bill Minsch reports the arrival of his second child in November. She is Cynthia. There is also Katherine who is 3½ years old. I wrote in these notes last month that Bill had been transferred from Portsmouth, N.H., to Washington, D.C., as general counsel for the Atomic Energy Commission. He had formerly been in the Portsmouth, Ohio, not the New Hampshire A.E.C. office. I'm glad to make this correction and to bring news about Cynthia and Katherine. . .. Also in the baby group is Ellen Wasserman, now about two years old. She is the daughter of Lee andArt Wasserman of Scarsdale, N. Y. Ellen has two older brothers, Tim, who is 13, and Jeff, 10.
We've always known that Bob Ireland was a genius. Now to prove it he's on Frank Danzig '37's T.V. show "Mr. Genius" as an "assistant genius" fighting each week to stay on the panel. If Bob is still on by the time you read these notes he'll be more famous than Hal March. Bob Ireland is manager of the Constitution Life Insurance Co. regional office at Redondo Beach, Calif., and lives at 4563 West 172 St., Lawndale, Calif.
Keep in mind the Dartmouth Alumni Fund Campaign. Our Head Class Agent, KirkLiggett, and his assistants are working hard on that right now.
Al Phipps has been elected chairman of the International Service Committee of the New York Rotary. I met Al on 42nd Street a few weeks ago and he looks exactly as he did when he used to wear his racoon coat on the campus, or travel down to Northampton to see Laura. His daughter Pamela is a sophomore at Skidmore, and son Al Jr., successfully recovering from a bout with rheumatic fever, is 19.
If you want to buy a freight car see ChuckVenrick. Chuck has recently accepted the responsibilities of district sales manager of A.C.F. Industries in Chicago. Enthusiasm for our Reunion is building up. I wish there were space to give you a list of classmates and wives who are planning to be there, but I want to quote from one letter. It just came in from Ed McGrath of Waterbury, Conn. Ed writes in part:
"It seems that right at the time of our four past reunions there was a baby in the family - their present ages being 18 years, 14 years, 6 years and 18 months. However, I have heard about the impromptu 20th at Old Greenwich on June 2 and, believe me, we shall do everything to make that one. If I wait for the 25th it would be just my luck to have Catherine present me with another baby."
So, here's the last call for the Big 20th at 12 Vista Ave., Old Greenwich, Conn., on June 2, from 1 p.m. See you there.
