This column will be devoted to the weekend of October 12, 1957 in Hanover. Liz and I left New York City after seeing the seventh game of the World Series. We were spotted on the Merritt Parkway by Marian and OrvDryfoos. Orv was bound for a Dartmouth Trustees' meeting held prior to our class Executive Committee session. They were accompanied by their son Bob who had an interview at Deerfield. We all had dinner together. In Northampton we called on Herb Heston, Director of Public Relations and Development at Smith College. He took us on a personally conducted tour of the campus. Paradise Pond looks the same but, oh, those new dormitories. Herb was set to watch his son, Frank, play football that afternoon.

Never saw the foliage more beautiful. The splashes of color were right off the palette. One hardy soul was water skiing on Lake Morey when we arrived at Bonnie Oaks, class headquarters. According to George Copp we latched on to the bridal suite - a warm room, bed springs that didn't squeal and a shower in the bathroom. None of these refinements were to be found in George and Marge's room and they felt that there must have been some vested interests or skullduggery involved. The weather turned frigid overnight and Helen and Peanuts Davis and Shirley and Ray Hulsart really froze in their cabins. Laura and Frank Heath and Mary and Bob Engelman drove in to Hanover to enjoy the huge bonfire roaring in the center of the campus and to listen to the cheers and songs of a traditional Dartmouth Night. Back to Bonnie Oaks to find Ruth and Art Moebius showing colored slides of pictures taken last year at the Keene's. These were followed by Alice and Nick Xanthaky's movies of the outing at Nels Krogslund's with songs and musical accompaniment by Bill Scherman and Jane's really hep-cat on the keys, Jack Gilbert. Les Reeve and Marty Dwyer acted as masters of ceremony and well they might since they'd left their wives at home. Marion and Mike Joseph were all for going and waking up the Brown team quartered in the Lodge but were dissuaded by the cooler heads of Nan and George Kimball and Gert and Nelson McClary. Margaret and John Bathrick retired early to dream about their son, Dave, who was to star at right tackle the next day. That was the position he played according to the program but the announcer had him in the Brown backfield all afternoon where he looked great. Incidentally Bob Engelman's son, Denny, was on the Freshman football squad until tennis coach Red Hoehn asked him to quit. He is that good at tennis. Pru and Harry Gilmore accustomed as they are to the chill North winds of New Hampshire were the last to call it a night and the first to be down at breakfast in the morning.

Saturday was a glorious day for a football game and the Executive Committee meeting. Chairman Scherman (how's that again?) announced that Bob Newman had consented to accept the editorship of the class book to be issued for our Twenty-fifth Reunion. He will select his own staff and gather the news about you, your families, and your activities. Since the watch dog of the Treasury, BillWilson, was in charge of the barbecued chicken stand in front of Memorial Stadium (how else could they feed 13,500 spectators before game time?) his report was read for him. He humbly asks us to pay the class dues of $6 and keep alive our fine class spirit. Bill not only made all the plans for the weekend including the arrangements to have us all seated together at the end of the field where all the Dartmouth touchdowns were made, but he and Jo were official hosts at their home after the game. We park our cars on his front lawn and in the winter use his backyard for skiing, the least we can do is back him up one hundred per cent when we get his bills and show our appreciation for his wonderful work and generosity.

Brown vs Dartmouth.... In our section we saw Helen and Ace Miller with their two boys, Ronnie and Jim; Helen and Alden Clark with Alden, Jr., who is in the Freshman Class, and Bill who someday hopes to be; Effie and Elmer Fulton were right in front of me. Next year we must see if Elmer can let us have Loch Lyme Lodge to hold our meeting. There seems to have been enough criticism about our choice this year. Jack Wholey and Bill Judd chatted with us during the half. Herm Chase was absolutely impartial. He had some of those Brown men in his classes. Bill Carr was making mental notes of Blackman's V formation to tell his little league son. Our scouts saw Jack Hinsman also with a son, Jack Jr., in his first year at college and Dave Beasley with his daughter who goes to school at Colby Junior College and Pret Belknap. Saturday night we were joined by Janet and Bob Williamson, Boots and Al Jacobsen with their daughter, Susan; and Barbara and Ed Brown. Al had cocktails with Dave Hedges and Maury O'Connor at the Town House in Los Angeles last summer and reports that it's a Scotch mist that gives Los Angeles that atmospherical condition.

Sorry that Bernice and Jim Wendell couldn't join us. His Memorial Fund drive is temporarily halted until we see how the college wants us to handle this in connection with the capital fund drive for the 200 th Anniversary Program.

At the last minute Tom Beers and Mary had to cancel their plans because he had a long siege with the flu and was still too weak to make the trip. According to Bill Morton '32 the same bug bit brother Roily Morton. Sickness in Edie and Bob Smith's family obliged them to miss the fun and when Jeff Jackson's father caught the germ, Jeff had to remain in New York to get out an important report. I spoke to Walt Crandell's wife Eloise, and she told me that Walt had been taken to the hospital a couple of days before we arrived in Hanover with a bad back. They hope it's not a disk but Eloise was not too optimistic. Poor Walt has certainly had a rough time and we pray for his speedy recovery.

Guess that about wraps up the details. Wonder if it gets across the sense of renewed love for the college, of fellowship with men and their attractive wives who are fine to see again and again, of the excitement in watching a college crowd of boys and girls, a marching band and a winning football team, in all things a keenly felt awareness of the Dartmouth spirit.

I have an abundance of news this month thanks to many of you who have written notes when forwarding the class dues to BillWilson. Will save them for the next column as all secretaries have been asked to economize on space so that everyone of the alumni fund givers can be recorded.

A Merry Christmas to all of you and a Very Happy New Year.
