HARVARD DARTMOUTH SLALOM
The Harvard-Dartmouth Slalom, an annual spring event, was originated in 1934 by Bradford Washburn, Harvard '32, to "promote a friendly, informal rivalry between the two colleges." Every spring this social as well as athletic affair has been staged in beautiful and spectacular Tuckerman's Ravine of Mt. Washington in the White Mts. of New Hampshire.
The present-day classic is noted for its informality. Entries from either school are unlimited and alumni participation is especially encouraged. At times this can be confusing. Two years ago, for instance, a Harvard-educated Dartmouth professor returned to ski for his old alma mater. Alumni participation is extremely important, however, and is actually the determining factor in the outcome of the race. The present scoring system has been to count all the combined times of the team with the smallest number of entrants. The other team counts an equal number of its best times. This encourages a large participation which is the purpose of the race. During recent years Harvard has had a larger field as a result of the number of alumni racing, while Dartmouth has had to rely mostly on its undergraduates. Right now, the record stands at Harvard 10 and Dartmouth 9.
I know that Dartmouth has many fine skiing alumni who would like to even this record up this year, so I urge all those to attend who can possibly do so. They would not only give Dartmouth the balance that is needed, but would add greatly to the adventurous spirit of a fine spring skiing weekend, friendly rivalry, and good fun.
This year the race will be on Saturday, April 20, at about one o'clock. If the weather is especially severe, it will be held the following day at about the same time.
As part of the social affair, there will be a party at the Harvard Cabin at Pinkham Notch following the race. At this time the results will be announced and the Cup will be turned over to the winning team.
Here's hoping that Dartmouth will have a large representation at Tuckerman's on April 20.
