REUNION-JUNE 14-16
It's too early to tell yet, as this column is written well in advance of publication, but the snow is thinning and it looks like we'll need a repetition of last year for much in the way of slope activity. So it's almost time to put that final coat of lacquer on, tie 'em up tight, stand 'em on their toes, and start polishing the irons. Be that as it may, however, there are several items on the agenda that need attending to, so enough of this lead-in.
To begin with, as you already know, Bernie Lewis and his organization are off and running early this year to get this matter of the Fund not only off to a good start but an early and successful finish. We have several goals in mind. First, of course, we want to go over the top. Second, we would like to see our drive over by reunion. Thirdly, we would like to see the Class do its best job this reunion year. Fourth, we would like to lead the pack this year in the Little Green Derby; it's high time we outdo our contemporaries in the younger classes instead of settling for second or third place. This "we" business, incidentally, represents everyone I have talked with on "the subject including the 60-odd men working with Bernie and the Class as a whole. Most of the Class comes through, but it needs everybody and as much help as each can handle. This writer stumps but once a year on this subject. I'll say no more; but plan to make this year the best out of five. With regard to reunion, all of you should have received the March issue of the Crier so there's not much I can add. You will receive a mailing shortly on the matter of reservations. For further information contact me or Bob Binswanger at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass. and in any event plan to be in Hanover.
WHAT'S NEW WITH '52
The Annual Dinner -of the Dartmouth Club of Boston saw quite a gathering of the Clan including Jack Boyle, who is with Lewis-Shepard; Howie Smith who is with Brockway Smith Haigh Lovell Company in Boston; Ed Clark who is finishing up at Harvard Law School; Sandy Sanders, currently working with Goodwin, Proctor & Hoar in Boston; Al Davis also finishing up his third year at Harvard; Ed Finerty who is now associated with the Nuclear Products Division of Metals and Controls Corporation in Attleboro; Jack Crowell another with Harvard Law almost behind him; Lou Zehner now working with Arthur D. Little; Bill Biddle, who is teaching at Noble and Greenough in Dedham; Bernie Lewis now working for his father in the frozen food business in Portland, Me.; Bill Breed who is at Simond Saw in Boston, and George Hibben who is finishing up at the B School. Only three of this group will not be at reunion, incidentally, and two of those men are expecting offspring between June 13 and June 15.
Those who have been in the Hanover area recently include Jay Stahl, Dave Griggs, Marty Cunningham, and Bill Kay. Those who attended the Glee Club performances over Carnival had the pleasure of listening to Frank Logan's arrangement of Robert Frost's "Fire and Ice" which, as most of you may already know, was the theme for this year's Carnival.
Those of you who have been following the papers closely undoubtedly recognized the name of Richard Roraback in connection with the recent escapees from Hungary. Dick was expelled from that country after being accused of aiding refugees to freedom. He had been studying at the Sorbonne and at last report was planning to return to Paris to continue his work there.
At Bear Mountain, N.Y., January 6, Charlie Tremblay managed to put Arthur Tokle and Art Devlin behind him to capture the Norway Class A and The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Ski Jump. He took the events with jumps of 149 and 150 feet. Charlie, incidentally, is finishing up at Tuck this year.
Running through some notes here, I note that Terry Malone and wife, Sally, plan to be in Hanover for reunion. Dick Brown is now associated with the Friden Calculating Machine Company in San Francisco and is doing system sales work with that organization. Tom Dunham, who left the Class before graduation, has a unique address these days. He is working for Mobil Oil Cameroun in West Africa. Charlie Lyon is associated with R.C.A. as a Personnel Representative at their Camden, N. J. offices. Charlie Roberts is among the bankers of the Class and is working with the First Pennsylvania Banking and Trust Company, in Philadelphia, Pa. Buck Zuckerman lists his occupation as Actor and is currently living in New York. Bill Murphy is working as a salesman for the McLouth Steel Corporation out of their Detroit offices. Bubs Richardson indicates that 800 miles from the North Pole is too close and that skiing in Greenland is indeed a lonely sport. He goes on to say that trees and women are definitely in absentia and that July can't arrive fast enough. Apparently Thule's fascination, at least as far as one airman is concerned, has long since worn off.
WHO'S NEW WITH '52
I finally have more than just a single for this spot. Going back to December 17, David Frederick Uncles put in an appearance, weighing in at 8 pounds 11 ounces. Jack indicated that in view of the fact that this domestic problem is over, at least for the moment, both he and Pinky plan to be in attendance in June. I have' word that Mrs. Frohner presented husband Art with a baby daughter last December. On January 3, Michael Allen Gschwind arrived tipping the scales at 6 pounds 11½ ounces. Both parents came through with flying colors, and five days later at the annual meeting of the Philadelphia Alumni Club the father was elected President of that organization. No statistics on this last one but Wendy Erskine Lord is the latest addition to the Robert Lord family. She put in her appearance on February 14.
TROTHS AND BETROTHS
Under this general heading a recent engagement was that of Bill Mattox and Joan Burland of Washington, the state I think. Both Bill and his fiancee made known their intentions in Germany and plans call for a return stateside next January. John Rhodes and Mary Jane Carson announced their engagement early this year. John's bride-to-be is a graduate of Randolph-Macon Women's College. The engagement of John Geary and Georgianna Hoag of Poughkeepsie was made known last December. John's fiancee attended Columbia University, and is associated with Conde Nast Publications. John is working with the Armstrong Cork Company. A spring wedding is planned. Ed Sumner and Linda Master announced their engagement on January 24. Linda is currently a Junior at Barnard College and a summer wedding is planned. Ed has two years as a corporal behind him having been separated in September of 1954. Since that time he has been attending the General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He expects to be graduated on May 22, and will be ordained shortly thereafter. Assignments are not definite as yet but he will probably be living in New Jersey for the first few years.
As for the matter of nuptials I have three to report. On December 21, Dr. Howie Geist and Sally Hasse exchanged vows in Gerald, Mo. Howie's bride attended the Washington University School of Nursing in St. Louis and Howie is now a resident surgeon at Barnes Hospital in that city, On December 22, DocDey and Phoebe Ann Evans were married in Montclair Heights, N. J. The bride is a graduate of Skidmore College and had been associated with the advertising department of Lord and Taylor. Doc has the Navy and some graduate work at Columbia behind him and is presently a teaching fellow at Phillips Academy Andover. Bob Herr was among the ushers. A week later in Boston, Sally Dabney became the bride of Ev Parker. Ev's bride is a Smith College graduate. After week's honeymoon in London and outlying areas, they went on to Germany where Ev has about six months more duty with the Army. After discharge, he expects to enter the Law Firm of Bingham, Dana, and Gould in Boston. Al Davis was an usher and Sandy Saunders and Steve Meterparel were among those in attendance.
