Those who read the papers or watch TV learned last fall of vast forest fires in and around Monrovia, Calif., where Herb Kelley lives at 213 E. Scenic Drive. Fire started about ½ mile from his home but fortuhnately veered away.

Andy Jackson tells of a visit to the college with Ned Kenerson and Mort French. They visited Cohen Hall and were welcomed by a sedate and courteous gentleman, aged about 4, son of the resident faculty family. Andy said he was reminded of Henry Paul 1873, father of our Carroll who on his return in 1899 and seeing the then new Richardson with its toilets and baths, the first in the college, gazed intently, took off his hat, made deep obeisance and reverently backed away. Shades of Island #10. Andy said his reactions were similar.

Later a letter from Ned Kenerson also telling of the visit just reported by the "General." It has been Ned's good fortune to see recently Roy Thorpe and his wife. Roy was convalescing slowly. Did you classmates write as I asked? Ned has also seen the Bennetts at their home, 72 Humphrey St., Swampscott, Mass. I'm slipping in occasionally the address of a classmate. Please make a permanent note of these. Ned says Bennett continues at medicine but is gradually retiring. Ned and his wife called on Mrs. George Patch at her home on the road between Shelburne Falls and Ashfield, Mass. Mrs. Patch winters at Smyrna Beach, Fla., and has a neighbor, a daughter of Tom Barnes '02.

Along comes our treasurer's - Harold Hess - report. Here's an Amy Vanderbilt question. Apparently Harold is in touch with some 16 widows of classmates. How does a new secretary go about, to gain the same results? I don't know who they are. Harold apparently keeps that to himself but I would be glad to hear from any or all - object News. OK, Amy?

AG Smith and wife Miriam have returned from a Hawaiian trip by train, steamer and plane. Says such means of travel is better than when he motored 'round trip to California a year ago and came home physically bent.

Ned Kenerson passed on a letter from Billy MacLennan, Box 2292, Carmel, Calif. Billy in retirement seems to continue active in civic affairs and his wife Eunice is busy with her painting and is preparing for her own exhibition later this winter. Ned and Billy apparently were discussing present day educational trends for Billy mentioned that recently in a nearby California city six. weeks had been taken from an English course and given to lessons in auto driving. Reminded me that Bill McCarter '19 in one of his Hanover Scenes wrote that when he entered Dartmouth "he had at least two things rare among secondary school pupils nurtured on social studies and driver training; he knew arithmetic and the alphabet." Hope today's students come equally well equipped.

A classmate writes that I erred in three respects in the list of names which I gave to those appearing in the Reunion picture. Horrible - but I wonder; no one else has written of any error, even those where I am told that I erred. Before making any suggested correction I am going to let mine stand for another issue hoping for further comment. Wonder if my classmate is giving me a ride?

Herb Follett, 615 Olive St., Chico, Calif., writes that he is enjoying semi-retirement, but keeps abreast of things through partnership with his son John '36 in the ownership of some retail department stores. Only old timer he sees is Soap Davis '02 who lives in nearby Paradise. Herb, more about "Potholers" later.

There was a big news gap between New England and California which MacEldowney closed when he wrote from Chicago of the meeting when President Dickey gave a talk on some of the 200th Anniversary objectives. Frank found none of his vintage but went home with renewed inspiration and happy recollections of Doctor Tucker.

Ralph W. Pillsbury died at Concord, N. H., Sept. 15, 1958. I regret that more complete information must be deferred until the next issue.

Christmas and New Year's will come and pass before the next issue. Here's to you all, with best wishes from the Wadhams and may your memories be bright and happy as we celebrate those days with due reverence and renewed faith for the future. Noel.
