The sudden death of Phil Winchester, our faithful Secretary and Agent, makes a new and sad break in '99's ranks. A memorial article to him will be found farther on in this issue of the MAGAZINE. The deepest sympathy of the Class goes to Sadie Winchester and to Robert.
Phil went on the Sunday before Christmas and then the day after the holiday came the second break in the ranks with the death of George Clark in Concord. An article on George will be ready for the March issue, but a few words will be appropriate here about the service in the Plymouth, N. H Congregational Church Saturday afternoon! Dec. 28. The pastor of the church, Rev! Deane L. Hodges, conducted the service with a simplicity and dignity befitting, we all felt, what he called the "gracious personality" of the one who had gone. Representing '99 were the following: Ralph Hawkes with his granddaughter Debby Tracy, Joe Hobbs, K. Beal and May with their son Bill, Tat Irving, Lillia Musgrove, Esther Parker with sister Ruth Josephson, Gertrude Silver, Eva Speare. Others from out of town, but longtime friends of Clarkland, were the Clifford Fifields, the Ned Warrens and daughter Julia Golding. the Morton Wheelers, the Larry Jacksons, besides numerous local friends.
On the brighter side of '99's Christmas were the family reunions. About many of these we shall doubtless hear more, but we know that: Bill and Carrie Hutchinson were at State College, Penn., with daughter Sally Glass, whose husband is Supervisor of Engineering Research in the University. In '55 and '56 they were with daughter Aileen Lambing in Arlington, Va. Bill reports that Bill Jr. is completely recovered from his serious illness a year ago, and is the December father of Bill Sr.'s first great-grandson.
Hawley Chase was with daughter Marion Berry in Newport, N. H.. for Christmas, and with daughter Janet McSpadden and family in New Jersey for New Year's. The K. Beals spent Christmas with son Bill and his family in Winchester, Mass., instead of their coming to New Hampshire as in recent years. The Arthur Beals called on their way for a visit with the Malcolm B's in Miami, and we reached the George B's by telephone, in Georgia.
The "Warren Kendalls have often spent the holidays with daughter Roberta Kennedy in North Carolina, but this year yielded to son Bill's plea to celebrate with his family in Louisville. At Thanksgiving Joe Gannon with daughter Genevieve Read and husband Winter entertained Patricia Gannon Read Carpenter and the four great-grandsons in West Hartford. At Christmastime "Pat" had everybody in turn up at her and Lionel's new house in Hampton, N. H. Finally, Arthur Wiggin, lonely after the death of his wife Glenna in November, was cheered by a big holiday tree and dinner for all his numerous progeny, sponsored by his daughter, Dorothy Ray, in Exeter.
Yes, Christmas is still Christmas. Write K. Beal about yours, won't you? And in the words of Tiny Tim, "God bless you, every one!"
