Again it is your secretary's duty to report two losses from its ranks during the summer months.
Jack Wallace died in his Cleveland, Ohio, home on July 7, after several years of serious illness. The week later the death of John Jewett, following a heart attack, occurred on July 14.
These men were leaders in their respective vocations, Jack as a business executive, John as a teacher and administrator. Both have left widows who will continue to be interested in '07 and in Dartmouth.
See the In Memoriam columns of this or a subsequent MAGAZINE for fuller records of the mature activities of these two friends.
Bob Kenyon reports that classmate Fred Baldwin has accomplished quite a lot in 1959. For example, he bought a piece of land in Florida near Sarasota; and a new 40 by 10 foot trailer; and acquired a new Mrs. Baldwin, as of February '59! A big year for Fred and best wishes to him and his family. They return to Cape Cod for the summer months.
Bob reports further that the Kenyons, the Hough tons and Allan Brown lunched with Gus and Mrs. Wiswall in Dunedin, Fla., and Bob rates Gus as the youngest looking member of '07. Many '07 men, including Bob and your secretary, wish that Gus would participate in '07 meetings more frequently.
"Runt" Martin retired last April from his nearly twenty years' association with a newspaper in Daytona, Fla. His retirement address is Halifax Manor, 444 So. Beach Street, Daytona, Fla. Call on him if you are in his vicinity next winter, or write to him.
As usual, a very informal reunion of '07 men and wives was enjoyed in June by a small but enthusiastic group. Those present were: George Grebenstein and his wife; Herb and Channing Hinman; Bob and Mrs. Kenyon; Kitching; Tim and Mrs. Richards; Al Stevens; Don Williams; George and Mrs. Liscomb; Allan Brown, daughter and grandson; Bill and Mrs. Ahern; Harry Storrs; Harold Oliphant; Dick and Mrs. Lane.
Jack Childs '09, organizer and host extraordinary, has suggested that '07, 'OB and '09 consider holding future reunions together. Think it over and express your opinion to your class secretary.
Phil and Mrs. Chase have had an extensive vacation in Europe this summer. A report from him should be ready for the November MAGAZINE.
Each '07 man will be delighted to learn that Tufts University honored "Judge" McLane by awarding him an honorary degree last June. Dr. James M. O'Neill, educator, author and lecturer (Jim to us), delivered the Commencement address at Georgian Court College, Lakewood, Conn., on June 6.
In July Don and Mrs. Williams entertained at their Brick House on Hurricane Road in Keene, N. H., a representative number of '07 men, wives and a daughter. Present were: Ahern, Kenyon, Stevens, Sanborn, Houghton, Williams, and their wives. Also Kitch and daughter, Knapp, Brown and Storrs.
Treasurer Sam Bartlett invited the class widows to indicate their interest or lack of interest in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, which many of them have been receiving as evidence that the class wishes to keep alive their interest in their husband's class. Replies were almost unanimous that they enjoyed receiving the MAGAZINE, and thereby maintaining an interest in the College and their husband's classmates. It was an impressive display of continued interest in 'O7 and Dartmouth.
The following is a sample of the responses: "What a thoughtful letter! Thank you so much for thinking of me." "I do appreciate the Dartmouth MAGAZINE - and first of all, '07 news. It keeps me in touch with friends." "It's a wonderful thing for 'O7 to do!"
