Welcome again to another fall season, which finds us with an accumulation of summer news about the doings of the class. Back in the early summer these people were making news: J. Walker Wiggins became a grandfather with the birth of a third son to Dr. and Mrs. James W. Wiggins Jr. of Cleveland Heights. And on June 21 Mai Ripley and his wife celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary in Hingham, Mass. Mai has for years been active in young people's activities in his native town. Celebrating its thirty-fifth reunion, the class of 1924 of West Springfield, Mass., called on Mort Collins to act as toastmaster. Mort is President of the Blair Manufacturing Company, manufacturers of those good Blair lawn mowers. Also in the early summer Al Bolte became Vice President of Tampax, Inc. Congratulations to you, Al.

We also received an announcement in June of the marriage of Miss Judith Ellen Brown to Leonard Willmarth Schmitz. The wedding took place in Hanover.

Over in Portland, Me., the Russ Grays were honored by the State Street Congregational Church on June 21, the occasion of Russ's resigning his post of minister of music which he had held for twelve years. And still in Maine the Portland Express had this to say about our Undersecretary of the Treasury and to the sentiments put forth the whole class subscribes:

Memory runneth not to the day when a Maine man has been awarded three honorary degrees in eight days. The recipient of this unusual honor in 1959 is Undersecretary of the Treasury, Fred C. Scribner Jr., who will always remember this June as the month in which he received doctorates, honoris causa, from Colby, Bowdoin and Dartmouth Colleges.

More important than the diplomas themselves is the career behind them. Fred Scribner has distinguished himself as a lawyer, public official, politician, and good citizen. The Evening Express is happy to join in the applause.

Probably many of the alumni of the college during the summer viewed the Dartmouth Glee Club as it participated in "Bonanza" at the Radio City Music Hall. Among the undergraduates who were in the show were Art Browning's two sons. Reed, a senior this fall, and Simms now a sophomore. What a way to make a vacation job pay off working with 36 Rockettes and 26 ballerinas. A year ago this past summer the Brownings toured Europe with the Pilgrim Fellowship Choir of the Congregational Church of Manhasset, N. Y.

A classmate who also took a flyer into TV this summer was Pete Davis. Perhaps some of you saw him very effectively tell the story of how his Brockton Public Market has grown to its present size through financing arrangements made with Prudential Insurance Company.

In a letter to Fred Watson, Class Agent, Mac Horwitt writes he now has the title of Medical Research Supervisor and adds "Had an important break-through in our research last month, thanks to a lucky break with ultra-micro gas chromatography on brain tissue. Maybe you will hear about it but it would be pleasant to be able to discuss it with you. How chemistry has changed! I can now split one microgram of a fatty acid mixture into twenty or more components quantitatively." Fred Watson adds "Mac is one of the outstanding biochemical scientists in this country."

In May Fred Watson also had a letter from Bob Blanchard in Ossining. N. Y. Bob now has a son Roy, a senior at William and Mary, and Mark a sophomore at Loomis and heading for Dartmouth '66. Bob writes "I am still with IBM and have been working in White Plains. I have run into Ed Warren on the commuter paths once or twice and saw John Holme at the Glee Club concert in Scarsdale. He is now with Bon Ami." Pat Patterson has just been named Cargo Sales Superintendent for Pan American Airway's Pacific Alaska Division.

For several years Pat was Traffic Manager for Pan Am's Latin-American Division, with headquarters in Miami. He later served as a member of Pan Am's technical assistance mission in Bangkok, Thailand. Sponsored by the U.S. Government, this group assisted in the development of Thailand's national airline.

Following three years in Bangkok, Pat was on a special assignment in Karachi, Pakistan. There he was engaged in market research and sales analysis work for Pakistan International Airlines in connection with Pan Am's technical assistance program in that country.

Although his headquarters will be in San Francisco, Pat plans to spend considerable time at points served by Pan Am in the Pacific and Orient.

Another class member to collect an honorary degree this past June was Fran Horn, President of the University of Rhode Island. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Providence College.

In a bank merger on Boston's South Shore Frank Leahy becomes a member of the advisory committee of the South Shore National Bank. He formerly was a Director of the Randolph Trust Company. Owner of the Randolph Coal till 1952, Frank since then has been with Chase and Sons Co.

Roger Ela was happy when we saw him Labor Day weekend, his daughter Nancy, a sophomore at Colby College, having won a whole series of trophies at the Vermont 100Mile Trail Ride riding one of the family horses. "Horsey" family that they are, Roger's wife, Anna was in Michigan judging the Michigan Morgan Horse Show. Rog says they have recently purchased a small place in Woodstock to be near the riding and skiing events.

And now just to round out the record, if these notes seem disjointed we hope you'll accept the fact the Bowlens are in the process of moving as the reason. Early in the summer we were asked to join Bryant's parent company, Ex-Cell-O Corporation in Detroit as administrative assistant to the executive vicepresident. This has been a disjointed summer with the family split up, but now the crates are filled, the boxes piled high in the den, and in two days we are off to 20900 Smallwood Drive in Birmingham, Mich. We'd like to hear from you all there.

Dean of Freshmen Albert I. Dickerson '30 and his wife, Luda, on leave from the College for the spring term, are conveyed through the canals of Veruce by a gondolier.

Secretary, 20900 Smallwood Drive Birmingham, Mich.

Treasurer, 30 Boxwood Dr., Stamford, Conn.

L. L. (Pete) Callaway Jr. '30 of Westport, Conn., has been named Advertising Director of "Sports Illustrated" Magazine, after having held the same post with "Fortune." He began with "Time" organization in 1937, became the first advertising director of Time International in 1943, and was the automotive advertising manager for "Fortune" in Detroit from 1947 to 1950. He is vice president of the Citizens Planning Association in Westport, where he is active in community life.
