These notes will reach you a few days before Christmas and New Year's, near enough for me to wish for you and all your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Nine members of the Class met at the Algonquin Club Boston the night before the Dartmouth-Harvard game October 23. Sexton, Woods, Robinson, Maynard, Terrien, Bullock, Doonan, Lampee, Johnson. Many messages were received from classmates who could not be present. It was fine to know most of the men were enjoying reasonably good health. The breadth of the discussions held was worthy of the "nine grand old men" of the Supreme Court. No historic decisions were handed down. One man predicted Dartmouth would beat Harvard - a glaring example of prevision.
The Secretary attended the game in the rain. He is still coughing his head off but won enough money to pay the doctor's bills. The class will be happy to learn that Pen's operation on his eye was apparently sucessful - at least Pen was able to write the Secretary and his penmanship was excellent. Pen and Sara are staying at the Ritz Carlton in Boston and the class will be sorry to learn Sara has had to go to the New England Baptist Hospital for treatment. Sara celebrated recently her seventy-fifth birthday and the papers carried some sound advice for men 55 years out of college which she gave at that time. A salute to one of the outstanding figures in the Medical profession. Dr. Sara Jordan.
Our classmate Lester Ames passed away at his home in Bridgton, Me., October 27. While Lester did not graduate he was held in very high regard by all classmates. Ike Maynard and Charlie Tubbs have kept the Secretary in touch with Lester. We have marvelled at the courage and cheerfulness of a man who lost his leg clear up to the hip, many years ago - but Lester kept going and wrote many notes to the Secretary full of good humor and sound Yankee sense. Lester came to our 45th reunion, the only one he ever attended and enjoyed to the full the greetings of classmates he had not seen in nearly fifty years.
On our way home from Boston Sally and I called up Charlie and Gertrude Davis in Springfield, Charlie says, "just a setting." While in Boston Pat and Ann Manning called us by phone, they were just returning from a trip to Montreal.
Nice letter from Roscoe Smith. He doesn't like the politics in the State of Washington anymore than many of us do in Massachusetts.
Saw Jimmie and Fanny Walker at the Harvard game. The fact Jimmie was present at the game accounts for our winning. You remember last year Jimmie fell off a ladder putting on storm windows and went to the hospital instead of the game. They both are fine and send regards to all classmates. Charlie and Sunny Tubbs attended the inauguration of the new President of Smith College and Sunny represented the Smith College Club of Bath, Me.
