The whole class is going to be happy to learn of Vic Borella's recent promotion. Vic who for some years has been vice president in charge of operations of Rockefeller Center now assumes the new all-inclusive title of Executive Vice President. Best wishes to you, Vic, from all of us.
Meade Alcorn's December trip to Hawaii was well covered by the Honolulu Advertiser which had this to say about another '30 man: "Federal Judge J. Frank McLaughlin, Democrat, whose term on the bench has long expired, was among those persons greeting Meade Alcorn, Republican National Committee Chairman, at the airport last night. McLaughlin explained with a broad smile that he and Alcorn are both old Dartmouth College graduates."
In Bridgeport, Conn., the Sunday Herald which is always giving '30 favorable attention listed two of our members in its Christmas present list: Jack Keating for "another four years of making friends," and Fred Bowes "commendation for outdoing area firms in keeping Pitney-Bowes in the spotlight."
Hammy South, Brigadier General U. S. Marine Corps (Retired), has just been named Director of Public Relations for Moore McCormack Lines. When he retired from the Marines in 1958 after 27 years of active service, he was Director of Information for the Marine Corps in Washington and had that assignment for two years. He saw action in the American and Pacific theaters and participated in the assault and occupation of Saipan and Guam. With his wife Roslyn and three children Hammy lives in New York City:

In addition to the addresses above, weknow through the thoughtfulness of WallyBlakey of some other addresses that havechanged. For instance, Bert Gross is now located at 1424 Dominis Street, Honolulu 14,Hawaii. Frank Neff gives his latest address as1919 East Thirteenth Street, Cleveland, Ohio.Bill Fletcher, whom we haven't heard fromfor a long time, is living at 691 BoylstonStreet, Brookline, Mass.
Good news from Read Lewin who now is reported as fully recovered and again practicing medicine.
Wally Blakey also reports on word from Jesse Lichter whose address now is Corregidor G. S. 700-201, Colonia, Lomas in Virreyes, Mexico 10, D.F. Jess reports his business is going along smoothly and that his youngest daughter is learning a lot more Spanish than English. In connection with these addresses which Wally has supplied, this is a good time to let everyone realize that he is the largest source of news for the class that we have. In addition to the news that comes automatically to him as Class Treasurer, he apparently reads prodigiously and consequently supplies your secretary with excerpts from all kinds of periodicals from all over the country.
In these days when all of us have children working through the educational processes of the country it is interesting to see how often Henry Hillson's name comes up, most recently in the February 2 issue of Time. Here, Henry was quoted at length as Principal of George Washington High School and Junior High School. Under his leadership and experimental teaching and guidance program which has been undergoing trial for two years has been declared a complete success and the New York City Board of Education plans to ask for $500,000 to extend his program to some thirty lower income area schools.
For the younger set we have two announcements to make this month. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Chilcote have announced the engagement of their daughter, Katherine Anne, to James W. M. Brown of New York. Katherine is a senior at Smith College. Brown is a Cornell graduate and also received a degree from the Cornell School of Engineering in 1956. Also, on January 8, in Twin Falls, Idaho, Hank Embree's son, Thomas B. Embree, was married to Miss Constance Bastian. Meanwhile, Father Hank, president of Citrus Products Company, has been named chairman of the Mid-West Region Fund Campaign as announced by President Dickey.
The Financial Department is well covered with a series of bits of news. The first is a clipping advertising Robert Bottome & Cia., C. A. of Caracas, Venezuela, which is listed as offering "investment banking services, stock and bond brokerage, placement of commercial acceptances, special real estate situations, and security custody services." The December issue of "Your Tomorrow" quotes Hughie Johnson, editor and publisher of Johnson Investment Company charts, on the subject of "What Has Happened to the Market?" He answers it well; the secret there are more buyers than sellers. Fred Scribner was chosen by the Treasury Department to outline at recent hearings of the House Ways and Means Sub-Committee the Treasury's new "middle ground" theory for taxing income of life insurance companies. Basically, this provides that the tax would be based both on income from investments and also on other income including premium receipts. Finally, Fred Page has just been elected president of Tri-Continental Financial Corporation and a director of that company, its parent, Tri-Continental Corporation, and a Broad Street group of Mutual Funds - Broad Street Investing Corp., National Investors' Corporation and Whitehall Fund, Inc.
The latest word is that Pat Weaver, former president of NBC, looks set to return to the agency field as a general consultant on planning and programming with McCann-Erickson. Variety reports, "This would not interfere with Weaver's consultation commitments with Kaiser Industries and with Nelson Rockefeller."
Pete Davis, whose son is carrying on as a star on the Brockton, Mass., basketball team, draws favorable comment in Supermarket Merchandising which says:
An articulate industry spokesman, Stanton W. Davis, president of Brockton Public Markets, Brockton, Mass., has had a long career in the food business. After graduation from Dartmouth in 1930, he went on to Harvard Business School where he obtained a graduate degree. During the Korean War, he served as a member of the Meat Industry Advisory Committee on the Office of Price Stabilization Board.
A profit-sharing retirement plan can be a strong factor in employee morale, says Stanton W. Davis, president of Brockton Public Markets, Brockton, Mass. But if it's not handled with imagination, it can become just another fringe benefit, which employees may consider negligible.
And just as a final reminder, don't forgetthe Class Reunion next fall on September26, the weekend of the Holy Cross game, atthe Woodstock Inn. More plans will be forth-coming in the future but in the meantime, check that date on your calendar. The kidswill be off to school and just about then youwill be needing a vacation to see the Vermontfoliage. Better talk it over with the missusright now.
