Class Reunion - The 15th Hanover — June 19, 20, 21

It hardly seems possible but June 19, 20 and 21 are almost upon us so don't wait until the last moment to make your plans - Traveling companions in our class and others joining us; room accommodations in the appropriate place to keep your spouse happy; and last but not least, arrangements to keep the home fires burning while you paint the town red in the Hanover Hills. We expect all of you there!!

Partially due to the lack of space and time, but mainly due to the fact that the subject is covered more accurately and efficiently elsewhere the S. B. P. Poll of probable returnees to our reunion will have to be discontinued and yours truly will assume that he was right and everybody will be there.

On with the news, some old and some new. In the category of the former my records show no complete recognition of one Frank W. Harmann's accomplishments, even though I seem to vaguely remember that his picture appeared in one of our MAGAZINES. This be as it may, Frank on or about October 30, 1958 joined the Chemstrand Corp. as Merchandising Specialist in Domestic and Home Furnishings. He was formerly with the Cabin Crafts, Inc., Dalton, Ga. Prior to this Frank was across the border serving the director of Advertising and Market Research for the Toronto Carpet Manufacturing Co. To refresh your memories Frank not only is a graduate of our fair Alma Mater, but he also holds degrees from the Harvard Law School and Graduate School of Business Administration. He and his wife Margot and their four children now reside at Cherry Lane, Huntington, N. Y.

Bringing the news one step closer James Wells, as of a news release dated February '59, was appointed Director of Marketing for the William Underwood Company, Watertown, Mass., America's oldest canning com pany. Jim will be responsible for sales, merchandising and advertising both foreign and domestic. This sounds like a man-sized job, but I am sure Jim is well qualified. Congratulations and good luck in your new position, Jim.

February seems to be the month for news of big happenings as the following have gained prominence in their chosen fields. John Altorfer, Peoria, Ill., industrialist shows that he maintains his rugged individualism and stout heart as he joins a group of prominent men to form the State Life of Illinois, a legal reserve life insurance company, which officially commenced business on January 7, 1959 in Springfield, Ill. John rightly earns his title as industrialist as he also holds the following positions: Director of the Central National Bank of Peoria, President of Darlite Corp., former director of Altorfer Bros, (manufacturers of ABC washers and ironers until sold to Nash-Kelvinator), formerly vicepresident and director of Peoria Starch, Inc. and vice-president and director of Illinois Valley Broadcasting Co. He also holds many officerships and memberships on civic and community groups. Quite a list of achievements, John. I'm sure the class joins me in congratulating you!

Genial John A. Koslowski comes up as a prize winner in February taking away the top award in a recent sales contest conducted by Kelvinator. Nothing less than an all-expense paid round trip for two to Nassau. Can I fill that extra slot for you Johnny, or did you have someone else in mind? John is one of the top executives of Boston Filter Company, 43 Harvard Square, Charlestown. Congratulations, John, we are all green with envy.

Tommy Mc Manus deserves a pat on the back for a job well done in building a suecessful new Ford agency in Wakefield, Mass. Tom seems to find time for other things besides business as he is an active member of the U.S. Power Squadron and an avid sailboat fan. On the waters of Quannapowitt he instructs young Tom Jr. in the art of sailing.

March is almost as productive when it comes to giving credit where credit is due. David A. Schermer has recently joined (as of March 6) Diamond Gardner Corp. as director of new product development for the company's Diamond Match Division. Prior to this Dave was with Foote, Cone and Belding, New York advertising agency, as a member of the production and traffic department. It would appear from the news release date-line, Waterville, Me., that you have left the big city life to enjoy country living. Give us more details at the reunion. You are too close to refuse to come. Congratulations on your new connection.

George A. Graham Jr. joined the N.B.C. television network in 1953 and is now administrator for the network's television sales department and in February (which I should have reported) was elected vice president of the network. A real honor, congratulations to you, George.

I'll close my news prattling with an undated note from none other than our former ALUMNI MAGAZINE column reporter, Bill Baker. Bill just recently (sometime this winter presumably) returned from three weeks in Florida and Nassau (should have seen Mosbacher somewhere down in that area) and is ready to return. Bill reports things are really on the move down there and would like to hear from anyone in the class who lives along the East Coast in that general vicinity as he is seriously considering moving down. He currently resides in Springfield, Ill., and reports that not much is going on as bad weather is holding up housing work. Reunion is a must, Bill, and our sentiments go with you on our class directory. I want to see proof of this miraculous loss of weight and only slightly receding hair line. Can't say the same for myself. Thanks for the news.

It is with great sorrow that I announce to the class the passing of one of its outstanding members; Bob Mara. Only last fall I was reporting to you that it was great to see Bob back on the golf course after a battle with the medics. Unknown to me at the time was the fact that Bob had cancer and already had had his collarbone removed. So' it wasn't a mere game of golf Bob was playing but rather a battle for life itself. The high spirits and courage that Bob displayed typified his attitude toward everything in life. Bob crowded a great deal into a very short period of time not the least of which was an outstanding business career in a very competitive field. He was one of the foremost leaders in the sales of Mutual Funds and his advice was often sought by older and more experienced men than he.

The class as a whole and each and every member in it joins together in sending our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to Bob's wife, Natalie, and three wonderful daughters. Robin, Pamela and Penny, as well as to his mother and three brothers and sisters.

A. Michael Frothingham '43 is the new vice president and secretary of Ted Bates & Co. Inc., a New York advertising agency.

Donald W. Kingsley Jr. '43, editor of the General Foods News Services, was elected first vice president of the American Association of Industrial Editors at the organization's annual convention on April 8.

Secretary, Glen St., Dover, Mass.
