Class Reunion - The 40th Hanover — June 15, 16, 17
The dinner held in Boston on April 19 in honor of our distinguished classmate Bill Cunningham was a most impressive affair with over a thousand people on hand and a most imposing roster of head table guests. Bill was the first recipient of the Fred Digby Memorial Trophy, named in honor of the late Fred Digby who originated the Sugar Bowl classics in New Orleans. The whole affair was a remarkable tribute to Bill, a tribute not only to his ability as a newspaper man and columnist but to his fight to recover from cancer of the throat. On hand from 1919 were Spider and Bea Martin,Rock and Alice Earle Hayes, Tom Reilly,Earl Blaik, Harry Col well, Ken Huntington,Fat Jackson, Louis Munro, Guy Cogswell,John Shelburne, Bob Proctor, Jim Stone, with son Alan and your secretary.
A nice note arrived from Mary Ewart, widow of Sam, whose In Memoriam appeared in the May issue of the MAGAZINE. Quoting in part:
Sam had his usual delight in receiving his birthday card. It came a day or so late but on January 26, he began to inquire about it. Thank you for remembering so faithfully. Also, thank you and all of the other beloved classmates of 1919 for the book memorial in the Library inscribed in his name. Next to Sam's love for his family came his love for Dartmouth. His spirit and mine will be with you all at the 40th reunion.

Quoting in part from a letter of Trace Kohl's:
Since that postal card from Mexico last June I've completed a loop all the way back to New Hampshire, Maine, Cape Cod and we are packing the car again to return to Arizona and re-locate somewhere in the great Southwest. I've terminated my activity in the hotel business in this area. The coming few months will be busy setting up a new permanent address. Right now, we are thinking seriously about another freighter trip in the Pacific . . . remember the surprise meeting and Ol'-Fashion we had several years ago as Edna and I were preparing to board a Norwegian freighter for the Mediterranean? And I expect to see you before the trip this time again, George. That communication of Jim Davis' about the Faltering Fortieth reached me at the right moment and I sent back the card with a big affirmative check on it. I am looking forward to it even though I may be coming from Arizona. For me, this will be quite an occasion; I've never been to a '19 reunion.
Ernie Rautenberg checks in:
Thanks again for the trouble you take in not only sending out the birthday cards, but adding a personal note on the reverse side. This adds a lot. You probably know more of us by our first names than anyone else in the class. Incidentally - and it's not important - this is the first time it ever arrived late. I wonder if your records got mixed up. It was postmarked the 25th and my birthday was the 21st. Perhaps you are on a winter vacation. If so, I hope you enjoy it. Hope to see you in June.
Ken and Marge Huntington's card from Key Largo, Fla., indicated that the weather and fishing were great.
Tom Bresnahan was recently made associate advertising director of McCall's Magazine. The Class hereby extends to Tom its congratulations on his fine promotion.
" Another note from Tom Bresnahan: "Thanks for the birthday card. Come around and we'll buy a birthday drink. We're on our way at the moment to Jamaica with the Raibles to help them root their stable of horses home. I hope to break even because I need the money. P.S. - I'm back - Greif's horse, Irish Lancer came in second! I bought him for first!"
A report of the Relaxing Fortieth will appear in the special July issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE devoted to reports of reunions.
Don't forget the Woodstock-Hanover weekend October 9-11 — you will have recovered from June 15-18 — come up and see the Brown-Dartmouth game and check in at Woodstock on Oct. 9.
