The teaching profession seems to be in the forefront of Class news this month. Harry Fairfield's wife Mary reports six Fairfields now connected with educational institutions, ranging all the way from nursery school to Supervisor of Physical Education for 36 schools in a city of New York state. Also, four of Harry's grandsons are now in college, three of whom plan to be teachers. This is indeed quite a pedagogical record for one fine family.

Arthur Roberts has recently sent me a clipping in regard to his grandson, William S. Rogers, who has just been appointed Headmaster of the Pingree School. This is a brand new college preparatory school for girls located in South Hamilton, Mass. It is to be officially opened in September 1961. Rogers is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, '49, and is currently teaching English at St. George's School, Newport, R. I. From this, one can see that the art of education runs clear and true in the Roberts' lineage.

Martha Fowler, Alvah Fowler's wife, is, in a way, renewing her youth in her native state of California. Martha left Washington, D. C., in the sizzling heat of August, traveled across the continent, and was inducted into the alleged invigorating and salubrious summer climate of Los Angeles. Nothing is said about "smog." The first part of her visit was spent with her brother and his family in that phenomenally growing metropolis of the Far West. The middle of September she went to Stockton to wind up her California visit with a sister who lives in that city. Martha speaks of the great beauty of flowers and shrubs which, gently nurtured by Pacific breezes, bloom luxuriously everywhere on the West coast. For one of her years Martha sure does trip around. The weight of passing years seems to rest but lightly on this indefatigable member of the 1900 family. Only two years ago she made the grand tour of Europe, and in another two years we may hear of her in the Far East, in a trip around the world, or as an astronaut in outer space.

Cut Tirrell sent a letter of keen regret that he and his wife could not attend our 60th reunion in June. Over the years since graduation, it is undoubtedly the only reunion "Cut" has missed. Most unfortunately his wife is confined to a wheel chair and needs his constant attention. He remarks, however, that "We are quite content with our lot, and with the gardens and lawns looking nice we can enjoy nature at her best." Out-of-doors work and household chores keep "Cut" very much out of mischief, and fill his days with activity and helpful service. Despite his wife's difficulties, he shows wonderful courage and a splendidly optimistic attitude to life. His daughter and family, who have lived in England a number of years, were expected to return to Canada in August and take up permanent residence. "Cut" was very much hoping they might find a house to their liking near his home in Montreal.

Arthur Virgin, in cooperation with others, has been much occupied this past summer in an attempt to rehabilitate the North Hatley summer theatre project. After operating for four years this theatre had run into financial difficulties. At the July date of Arthur's letter, the cooperators were hopeful of solving the financial problem and successfully setting the theatre back on its entertaining ways.

Great news from the Alleways. At long last Oliver Foster, were he alive, could be very proud of a brand new granddaughter. On August 17, a daughter, Eve Olivia, was born to Mr. and Mrs. William H. Alleway of Stanford, Calif. Mother and child are do- ing nicely, thank you. One important fact about the arrival of Eve is that the male monopoly has at last been broken. William and two husky boys have made for a rather disconcerting imbalance in the family. Now the birth of a daughter has in part rectified the glaring inequality which has existed for some years.
