It's always a pleasure for me to call at Pepperidge Farms Bakery in Norwalk, Conn., but now more so than ever since MerleHagen is with them. Merle, formerly marketing research director for Parker Pen in Wis., came back East to work on Pepperidge's merchandising of their new frozen pastery line. Right about now, you should be catching some of his TV commercials featuring that grand old fellow, Titus Moody.
Merle and Nancy have made their home in Weston, Conn., and seem to be delighted to be back in New England. At one of his first luncheons in Westport, Merle ran into Steve Tate and Dick Revenaugh, However, just as he came East, Dave Pierson, formerly sales manager of Morton Frozen Foods (Continental Baking Co. in Rye) must have thought competition getting too stiff, and moved back to Merle's old area in the food brokerage field. Among other '44s he's run into, Merle told of meeting Jim Lang on the Huck Finn ferry at Disneyland a few years ago. He was also kind enough to save for me a clipping announcing the Navy's decommissioning of the former Destroyer Escort "Rogers Blood."
Last month I told you a little about Don Pfeifle's departure from the garment industry for the ski trails of Maine. He has almost completed his new, 3-story ski lodge on Sugarloaf Mountain, near Kingsfield, and after careful thought has named it Sugarloaf Inn. He has exclusive rights on the mountain for lodging, restaurant and cocktail lounge facilities. Sugarloaf is already Maine's foremost skiing area, with three Tbars and eight miles of trails and open slopes. Don's planned his opening for December and has constructed a giant hearth for those who prefer a hot-buttered rum approach to the chillier days. Incidentally, Don's eldest son Peter started at Andover this fall and found that Ray Crowley's is just a few doors down the hall from him.
Possibly you're wondering how that grand old campaigner, the Honorable Stanley J.Zarod, is making out in this election year. The incumbent Senator Zarod is being contested by three aspirants in the Democratic primaries. But you know that old saying about betting against Joe Louis, Notre Dame, the Yankees, and SJZ. We'll report the gala victory celebration next month. Can you imagine what a truly outstanding man Stan would be if he were a Republican!
While playing golf with John Steele yesterday I heard that Bill Reinman was in town this week for the Ohio Realtors' convention and got together with West Shell.
Insurance man Rog Antaya moved to a new home in Atlanta recently. But then there's been a lot of shifting within the old home towns as with John Kimmey in Columbia, S. C.; Sigmund Kulawik in Sioux City; Dick Lesser in Burlington, Vt.; and Dr. Craig MacBeth in Orange, N. J. Dr. EdPrice made the long move, however, from Bethesda, Md., to St. Paul, Minn.
Speaking about Bethesda, there was cause for celebration at the Dick Pleasants' household August 19, when young Richard Hall Pleasants IV joined the clan. Major NickManitsas is now making his home in nearby Washington, D. C. Lt. Comdr. Charlie McDowell is staff legal officer with the U.S. Pacific Fleet out of San Francisco.
Don Smith, VP and assistant to the president of Donahue and Coe Advertising in New York and director of Trident Films, Inc., has recently been elected to the board of directors of the YMCA of the Oranges and Maplewood in New Jersey.
It's pleasant to observe the Dartmouth football team's strength despite the comments of Sports Illustrated, at least as far as the first three games go. If they can maintain the same type of defense, yielding only two points a game, it should make a rather successful season.
