Without further ado, here is this month's news. This may seem rather abrupt to those of you (and I assume there are a few) who read my column, for I usually diddle around the bush for some time before getting down to hard rocks and the bare facts of '45. But this month I've nothing editorial to say and you are spared. However ... before you congratulate yourselves on escaping Scot free, reread this opening paragraph again. You've been had! And I apologize. The news!

The Reverend Ted Bennett has been serving as supply rector of the Norwalk, Conn., Grace Episcopal Church during the vacation of the regular rector. As this item is dated last August, I assume that Ted and family are back in Philadelphia where Ted, as you may remember, is executive director of the Commission for College Work for the Diocese of Pennsylvania. He also is a fellow of the National Council on Religion in higher education.

Active in local charitable affairs is ChadRamsdell, manager of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company's Melrose and Wakefield (Mass.) office, who has been appointed to the Commerce and Industry Department for the Boston 1961 United Fund Campaign. Chad's wife Nancy, incidentally, is quite a golfer, playing in many of the Massachusetts Women's Golf Association tournaments and doing quite well, thank you. I ran across Chad at the Women's State Championship this last spring. Alas, neither Nancy nor my wife Gertie survived until the final round. 'Twould have been interesting.

The J. Brooke Johnston Agency of the Equitable Life Assurance Society in Newark, N. J., has announced the appointment of Tom King as a unit manager. Tom, who has been with the company since 1952, is a member of Equitable's Group Millionaires Club, for in less than seven years he has underwritten a total of $4,770,700 in group insurance coverage. The National Quality Award for insurance agents has been awarded to Tom for the last four years. Tom, wife Mary, and their two children are living at 11 Van Riper Rd. in Wayne, N. J.

Al Lott is serving as the Huntington (L. I.) Town chairman of the Suffolk County Mental Health Association's i960 Bell-Ringer campaign. Al is executive vice-president and a director of the Permatex Company of Huntington Station, a major producer of chemical maintenance products with worldwide distribution.

Bill McKenzie, that neatly attired exurbanite of Outer New York, has been promoted recently to Manager, Eastern Seaboard Sales, of the Goodyear International Company with offices in New York City. Congratulations, Bill!

Turning to educational matters in which I naturally have a more than average interest, I note with enthusiasm the promotion of Elliot Goodman of Brown University to the rank of associate professor. Elliot went to Brown in 1955 as an intern, became an instructor the next year, and was named an assistant professor of political science in 1958. He is the author of a recent book, "The Soviet Design for a World State," and several articles on Russian affairs. He holds an M.A., certificate from the Russian Institute and the Ph.D. degree, all from Columbia. Harvard Medical School has announced the promotion of Dr. Frederick T. Hatch to the faculty rank of associate in medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Fred lives at 23 Fiske Rd., Lexington, Mass. C. William(Ducky) Drake of New Vernon, N. J., president of the Lehigh Warehouse & Transportation Co., has been elected to the Newark Academy board of trustees. Ducky is a past president of the New Jersey Warehousemen's Association and a member of the advisory board of the National State Bank.

We hear that Bruce Kenworthy has joined The Chemstrand Corp. as a carpet merchandising specialist. Prior to joining Chemstrand, he was a sales correspondent with Bauer and Black, a division of the Kendall Co. of New York City. Before that Bruce was also in sales work with J. L. Stifel and Sons Inc. and was market coordinator and northeastern representative for Bigelow Sanford, Inc. Bruce and his family are living at 23 Radcliff Road, Port Washington, N. Y.

BOXING THE COMPASS: Warren Smith of Bellows Falls, Vt., has joined the Barre Agency of the Massachusetts Life Insurance Company as a career underwriter and will cover the Bellows Falls, Walpole, Alstead area for that concern. Warren was previously sales manager for Smith Auto Sales. Harry Carter is serving as deputy counsel (since 1957) of the United States Information Agency, Washington, D. C. Out in Chicago, Bill Donohue is advertising representative for Conde-Nast Publications with offices in the city and residence in nearby Evanston. John Plummer is an instructor at Bennett College, Milbrook, N. Y. What's your field, John? Cleveland claim manager for Continental Casualty Co. is Dick Seybold who lives in South Euclid. Down in Larchmont, N. Y., is Ken DeGruchy who, during daylight hours, is branch manager for Graybar Electric Co., Inc. If my source of information is accurate, Ken has one whale of a commute, for his residence is listed as Ridgewood, N. J. True, Ken?

With that horrible thought in mind, I leave you for this month. But be of good cheer, for Thanksgiving is upon us and Christmas not far behind. So may seasonal spirit be with you when friend Oldfield knocks at your door. See you next month.
