The Spirit of '76. - "This is the title made to order for the 76th birthday of Louis C. Gerry, President of the Rhode Island Hospital, and hand-tailored to the man. Surely it fits him to perfection," said his associates in the Hospital on September 18. "It was a fortunate day that brought Mr. Gerry to Providence in 1916, for he has given unsparingly of himself in state and municipal activities and in civic organizations, especially in the fields of health and education. His contribution to the growth and development of this hospital is immeasurable. Every step forward — in education, in research, in patient care — has had his staunch support. That spirit of '76 which we salute here, has been a bulwark never failing." Lou's Dartmouth classmates will be proud of him and his outstanding contributions to his city and state. His address is 14 Loring Ave., Providence 6, R. I.
Ed Barker reports that his health is much better following an operation in April and hospitalization, but he is still on a restricted diet and under medication. Best wishes to him.
Al Stevens is now at home after a siege of illness and hospitalization, and is making a good recovery.
Many of Sam Bartlett's classmates have been wondering why he and his wife have not made their home in Hanover. The reason why they have remained in New York is that Sam's wife suffered a serious hip fracture earlier this year, and is not in condition to deal with the problems involved in such an undertaking.
Mrs. Warren Billings is one of many '07 widows who enjoy the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. She has a fine family of ten, children and grandchildren. Her three sons, all graduates of University of Michigan, are Richard in Providence, R. I., Robert in Kansas City, Mo., where he is head of the Kansas City Art Institute, and his wife is assistant-head of Art and Music at the new library; and Henry, who lives in California. Mrs. Billings makes her home in Reading, Penna.
Ed Ashley visited Hanover in September. Though it was quiet, he enjoyed dining on the Inn porch and listening to the chimes. Also, he had a visit with Dr. Harry Storrs, and with Dr. Jack Hammond. What more could one ask?
Don Williams, as all know, is a very hospitable person. For example, he wrote recently to Sam Bartlett asking him, "Do you get over this way? If you do, look me up. If I am not at 28 Court Street, contact the police. They know where I am 24 hours a day." That's hospitality!
Recent address changes are: Donald M. Houghton, P. O. Box 68, Anna Maria, Fla.; Wilfred H. Smart, 44 School Street, Boston 8, Mass.; Louis C. Wood, R. F. D. #1, East Waterboro, Me.
Hobbs Knight reports that he and his wife, Maude, are in good health, considering age and fifty years of married life, celebrated on September 24, at a party attended by 200 guests. Their daughter, Esther, lives in Coral Gables, Fla. She is Executive Secretary and Convention Manager for the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, and travels a great deal. Their grandson, Richard Smith Knight, is named after his father who was lost in a plane crash in the Pacific in 1945. Hobbs and his wife sold their hotel, but have efficiency apartments for summer rental. It appears that they are a.busy family.
