Among the faithful who were rewarded by the stunning upset against the Ivy League champs were Homer Tilton, who played hooky from a CD class with his dog "Tippy" (Homer being a "Radiac" expert), Dot andFrankie Osgood, who are remaining in the Lake Winnepesaukee area during the fall while he is on leave from his teaching duties, Ellie and Frank Wallis (unidentified by the usual beret!), the Marty Huberths, who of course are only a hop, skip and a jump from Hanover, the Coop Rhodes, who were spending the weekend, with-June Bryant, who was unable to attend the game because of a meeting of the trustees of Eaglebrook School, and of course the Hanover contingent of Wheldens, Leavitts and McKennans. Johnny Garrod was reported on a two weeks' fishing trip in the "Miramichi" (wherever that may be) in New Brunswick. While Sid Hazelton is not a '25er he will be remembered as a coach and teacher by most everyone in the class and it seems appropriate to record that he is still very active. Prior to the Penn game he was observed selling tickets at the chicken barbecue for the benefit of the Hanover Lions.
Homer, ever mindful of your secretary's interests, handed him a note on his travels during the summer reading as follows:
Peabody Shopping Center - met Bill and Kay Thompson - had long, pleasant chat. Goose Rocks Beach, Me., Fred and Marge Smith had cottage there for two or three weeks - and I'm glad I didn't find them until a day or two before they went back to their sheep in West Buxton - Fred and Marge are very hospitable! Duxbury - called on Dr. George (Eddie) and Beatrice Gardner — they have- a lovely recently-acquired summer home - interests: sailing and antiquing to appropriately furnish the new home, which they discovered, after buying, was the home, many, many years ago of Eddie's maternal grandparent branch. Goose Rocks Beach - had coffee with Les and Jesse King; best blueberry year so far, and they're building another cottage in their group of five or six (anyone for neat rentals - adv't!). Waban — saw Ken and Lyd Nugent and Bud and Cynthia Neilson at cousin Jane St. Amant's wedding. Goose Rocks Beach - while shepherding three grandchildren and a flock of other youngsters across the street - noticed a very low-numbered Lincoln (Mass. plates) slow down to let my "flock" get across - and as I walked away with a thank you wave, the driver hollered: "Why, Homer Tilton." Line Davis and some friends - just drove down to the seashore for the day from Severance Lodge. Pocasset - not having heard from Tippy and Dodie Tower all summer, took a chance that they might be down Pocasset way. When I looked for the name-sign on the cottage they used to hire, there was a new sign: "TOWER" - and there was the new owner, splashing away merrily on the window trim, and having a helluva good time working on his new cottage.
Observed at the Brown game: Dick Holden with wife and two youngsters, Bob Pierce with daughter, Gordie Churchill, the Woody Wilsons and the Eddie Griffins, who sat on the Brown side, the former with son-in-law, the latter with friends, Terry McGaughan, the Ford Wheldens and June Chamberlains.
The annual meeting of the executive committee was called to order in Crosby Hall at 8:30 after lighting of the bonfire the evening before the Holy Cross game. Twenty-four classmates were present; it is expected that a summary of the proceedings and the status of things will appear in an issue of The Roundup. It should be reported here however that Gair Tourtellot and Clifford Fitzgerald were elected to the executive committee. After the game Gertie and FordWhelden threw a cocktail party for all members of the class. The group, comprising a total of 51, then proceeded to the Montshire Restaurant in West Lebanon for a delightful dinner.
You-all should not expect to get an issue of The Roundup soon. Emily and Herb Talbot were expecting to sail for England on the Queen Elizabeth within a week after the gathering in Hanover.
The context of these notes, it will be noted, is governed largely by attendance at football games. Your scribe joined the FordWheldens, Ham Thayers and June Chamberlains for a picnic luncheon prior to the Harvard game. Nearby with a group of 27'ers, whose supply of cups and ice came in quite handy, was Red Martin. 25'ers must have had forebodings of the outcome of the Yale game. The only ones seen in the Dartmouth tent before the game were Nort Canfield and wife and Jack Per-Lee.
Bob Meginnity reports that while on a trip to the west coast to see his son he ran into the Al Sparks at Banff. They were returning from Alaska where they had visited their son. Bob and Ed Yates are planning to attend the Cornell game with the Mott Garlocks, CoopRhodes, Bill Buntings and Bob Smiths.
This message will reach you about three weeks in advance of the time when the spirit of Christmas reaches its peak. But it's the only opportunity we have to extend to you-all best wishes for a very happy holiday season and a prosperous 1961.
