We had a surprise phone call, visit, and subsequent lunch the other day with old grit and granite Bob Cushman, - sales manager, grinding wheels, the Norton Company. Cush was hustling the east north central middle western states hoping to sharpen its dull tools into gay blades. He looked remarkably well honed himself. He likes living near Worcester; reports Bill Russell, another Nortonian, feels likewise. We discussed people we haven't seen lately such as Hank Bagg and Bob Field. Then, the great gong of driving ambition began to boom, chasing us off to our respective cocoons of commerce.

We have always been interested in the statistics of participation - particularly the Class of '39 annual dues. Our guardian of the exchequer, Honest Jack Coulson, reveals the following:

Col. Bob Loughry has assumed command of the 552nd Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing at McClellan AFB, Calif. His new duty gives him command responsibility of the multi-million dollar Wing's 2500 officers and airmen. Three months ago Bob joined the 552nd Wing as Deputy Commander. For nearly two years prior to his transfer he had served as commandant of the Squadron Officers School at Air University. Bob has been in the Air Force since World War II. The Loughrys, which include Bob, wife Marianne, daughter Jan and son Jim, live in base quarters 108 at McClellan.

There are 589 living members of our class of whom 509 receive the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. It is sent to dues paying members, those who contribute to the Alumni Fund, and widows. 64% of our class regularly pay their annual class dues as compared to 60.1% for all alumni. Our greatest group of recalcitrants is the non-graduate group. In a normal year our class income over expense will be from $300.00 to $600.00. In a reunion year we usually go for broke. Over twenty years we have built a precariously vacillating nest egg in the middle four figures, as Dun and Brad-street would put it. This is not considered excellent for a class approaching its 25th reunion in four years with all the resultant expenses plus the expected sacrifice of the silver goose on the altar of tradition netting the college some tangible nest eggs. Plans must be laid. As they cackle, we shall report them.

Archie Mallon writes from his post as vice principal of Chatham Central School, Chatham, N. Y., that he had just returned from a football weekend in Hanover. Dartmouth had won. Weather perfect. Leaves turning. "I had a chance to visit a bit during the half with Joe Batchelder and Pem Pleasants. They both looked great and were enjoying the game immensely. Joe is living in Peoria, Ill., and is a partner in an advertising firm which handles subway, bus, etc., advertising. He has a son in this year's entering class and has him all settled in South Fayerweather. Pem has a son at the University of Colorado, and as you may know, lives weekends in Marblehead, Mass., and at least part of the week in Cleveland." Thank you, Archie. If what you say is true, be thankful this commuting falls on Pem — not you (Emily Dickinson).

Here's a Xmas gift idea — and it helps out in every way. Ken Turner '28, paralyzed by polio, operates the K. W. Turner Agency, Tomkins Cove, N. Y. This agency offers all published periodicals at publisher's rates as well as "Special Rates" - a useful service for gifts, renewals, new orders. Write him for literature.

One of the requirements of this column is to mention the name of everyone in the class as often as possible. Since everyone in the class doesn't write us that often, a problem is posed. We have long admired an annual poem of epic length published in the New Yorker around Christmas each year by Frank Sullivan - at least I think he writes it - conveying his greetings to a host of friends and acquaintances and, perhaps, hangers on. It's too esoteric to really read. But it saves him hundreds of dollars in Xmas cards. With all of these purposes in mind, we emulate him as follows: (It must be kept in mind that only the most euphonious of christian names are used - and only those listed in Roget's Thesaurus.)

Season's Greetings! These are mine To all the Class of '39! To Abbott, Adams, Albright, And three Anderson varieties, To Wyinan, Younger, Ralph C. Wright, And Gregory Zitrides. And all the letters in between Like Bill A. and Bill S. Green, Or George and John and Donald Gray,Kalaidjian, Krum, and Kevin Fay. Deck the halls of Middle Fayer With barleycorn from Charlie Maher. And round about the Old Pine go With Diffenbaugh and Larry Crowe. Wrap up the porch from C & G And stick it 'neath the Xmas tree So the tired tails of Howe and Bradley Can continue rocking sadly. Bearing frankincense and myrrh Are Kaiser, King, and Charlie Neer, Three wise men with extreme unction Hiking from White River Junction. On Baker's tower are Donner and Blitzen, Kuhlke, Mulkie and Richard Nixon, Pulling St. Charlie Nichols' sleigh Full Osgood-ies for Allyn Ley. With a wink of the eye to Henry A. White, Merry Xmas to all, and to all a GOOD NIGHT!
