Now that we are deep in the midst of winter, I thought that all of you would enjoy learning about one of the pleasurable ways of earning a living. I am referring to Walt and Jo Schubert, skipper and mate of the famous schooner, Malabar X. Sailing out of Staniel Cay Yacht Club, at Exumas, Bahamas, the Schuberts provide leisurely vacation cruises aboard their renowned ship. Should you desire a really secluded island vacation, there are cabins available at the club owned by Walt and his partner. For those of us contemplating a departure from the usual winter ski trip, it sounds great, doesn't it? If you are interested in more details, write Walt at Box 893, Nassau, Bahamas, and he will send you a most attractive brochure.
The town of Southwick, Mass., has recently appointed Bob Arnold to its Industrial Survey Committee. Bob is a prominent tobacco grower in the area, where he has lived all his life.
Getting to be president and winning awards still seems to be a habit for Dick Greene, our former class chairman. Dick recently received two awards for his work in the Massachusetts GOP fund-raising drive. As president of the Young Republican Club of Needham, Dick led the organization to raise 112% of its assigned quota, topping all the other communities of comparable size in the state by a wide margin. One of Dick's awards is an all-expense-paid trip to the convention in Chicago next summer. In the not too distant future I guess we'll be saying Senator Greene.
Two of our classmates are progressing very nicely in the Navy. Dave Richards is a Lieutenant Commander, serving as commanding officer of the escort vessel, the "U.S.S. Snyder." Dave's wife, Elizabeth, lives at 384 Hollywood Avenue, Hillside, N. J.
Jim Graham is also a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy. However, he is land based, now serving as military observer with the United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization with headquarters in Jerusalem. So that '48's rate of production does not decline, our class chairman, Bobo and Barbara Russell are setting a good example by announcing the birth of number four, Jacquelyn, on November 21.
Recently, Jerry Copleston moved to a new location in his home town of Coxsackie, N. Y. His new address is 28 Ely Street. Jerry is a civil engineer with a firm in Albany. He and Joyce are the parents of Jerry, three, and Suzanne, who is almost a year old.
I found it most interesting and very gratifying to note the large number of our classmates who are currently serving as officers of various Dartmouth clubs around the world, and I thought all of you might find it of interest. Therefore, here is a list of those '48's serving as club officers with the positions they are holding: Phil Kelly, President, Dartmouth Club of Hawaii; Dick Leggat, Secretary, Dartmouth Club of Boston; Stan Alger, President, Dartmouth Club of Cape Cod; Ed Nadeau, President, Dartmouth Club of Glens Falls; John Hatheway, Secretary, Dartmouth Club of New York City; Paul (Shorty) Johnson, Secretary, Dartmouth Club of Indianapolis; Lou Aronowitz, Secretary, Dartmouth Club of Albany; Russ Carlson, Secretary, Dartmouth Club of Syracuse; John Zillmer, President, Dartmouth Club of Milwaukee.
This list is evidence to me of the over-all activity of our class in Dartmouth affairs and I am hopeful that the directory coming out shortly will enhance this spirit and enthusiasm. See you next month.
